New Apostolic Nuncio Arrives in Malta
New Apostolic Nuncio Arrives in Malta: A Warm Welcome for Mgr Wojciech Załuski
As the sun set over the Grand Harbour, casting a golden glow on the historic city of Valletta, a new chapter in the Catholic Church’s presence in Malta began to unfold. Mgr Wojciech Załuski, the newly appointed Apostolic Nuncio to Malta, stepped off the plane at Malta International Airport, ready to take up his post in this Mediterranean island nation.
From Poland to the Mediterranean
Hailing from Warsaw, Poland, Mgr Załuski brings a wealth of diplomatic and ecclesiastical experience to his new role. Before his appointment, he served as the Apostolic Nuncio to Ukraine, a position he held since 2015. His career in the Vatican’s diplomatic service spans over two decades, with postings in various countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, and the Holy See.
Now, he finds himself in Malta, an archipelago known for its rich history, vibrant culture, and strong Catholic heritage. With a population of just over 500,000, Malta is the smallest member state of the European Union, but its influence on global affairs is disproportionately large, thanks in part to its strategic location in the Mediterranean Sea.
A Warm Welcome and a Busy Schedule
Upon his arrival, Mgr Załuski was greeted by Archbishop Charles J. Scicluna, the Archbishop of Malta, and other high-ranking clergy. The welcome was a testament to the close ties between the Maltese Church and the Holy See, a bond that dates back to the Knights of St. John, who ruled Malta from the 16th to the 18th century.
His first few weeks in Malta have been a whirlwind of meetings, visits, and ceremonies. He has already met with Prime Minister Robert Abela, President George Vella, and other high-ranking government officials. He has also visited various parishes and churches across the islands, including the historic St. John’s Co-Cathedral in Valletta and the Basilica of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Birkirkara.
One of his first official acts was to celebrate Mass at the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Ta’ Pinu in Gozo, a popular pilgrimage site. The sanctuary, perched on a hill in the heart of the island, is a testament to the deep faith of the Maltese people and their devotion to the Virgin Mary.
: A New Chapter for the Maltese Church
Mgr Załuski’s appointment comes at a time of significant change for the Maltese Church. The Church is grappling with a number of challenges, including declining Mass attendance, an aging clergy, and the fallout from the sexual abuse scandals that have rocked the global Catholic Church.
However, the Church in Malta also has much to celebrate. The recent canonization of George Preca, the first Maltese saint, has been a source of great pride and joy for the Maltese people. The Church is also actively involved in a wide range of social and charitable works, from education and healthcare to support for the poor and marginalized.
As Mgr Załuski settles into his new role, he brings with him a wealth of experience and a deep understanding of the Church’s mission. His appointment offers a chance for renewal and growth, a new chapter in the long and complex history of the Catholic Church in Malta.
“I am deeply moved by the warm welcome I have received here in Malta,” said Mgr Załuski. “I look forward to working closely with the Maltese Church and the people of Malta to continue the work of spreading the Gospel and serving the needs of all God’s people.”
