New Apostolic Nuncio Mgr Wojciech Załuski Arrives in Malta: A Warm Welcome and a New Chapter
Malta’s sun-kissed streets were a little brighter today as Mgr Wojciech Załuski, the new Apostolic Nuncio to Malta, stepped off the plane at Malta International Airport. The Polish prelate, who has served in various diplomatic roles within the Vatican, is set to bring a fresh perspective to the island’s Catholic community.
From Rome to the Mediterranean
Born in 1966 in the small town of Zabrze, Poland, Mgr Załuski has spent the better part of his career in the heart of the Catholic Church. After completing his theological studies in Rome, he was ordained a priest in 1992. His diplomatic career began in 2002, serving in various roles at the Vatican’s Secretariat of State. In 2018, he was appointed Apostolic Nuncio to Ukraine, a role he held until his recent appointment to Malta.
Malta, with its rich Catholic heritage and history, is no stranger to Apostolic Nuncios. The role, often referred to as the Pope’s ambassador, has been held by distinguished figures in the past, including the late Archbishop Paul Cremona, who served as Nuncio to Malta from 1996 to 2012.
A Warm Welcome in the Heart of Valletta
Upon his arrival, Mgr Załuski was greeted by a welcoming committee led by Archbishop Charles J. Scicluna. The scene at the airport was a testament to the warmth and unity of Malta’s Catholic community, with representatives from various parishes and organizations present to extend their welcome.
The new Nuncio was then whisked away to the Apostolic Nunciature in Valletta, a grand 18th-century palace located in the heart of the capital city. The building, which has served as the residence of the Apostolic Nuncios to Malta since 1964, is a striking example of Maltese Baroque architecture and a familiar sight to locals and tourists alike.
: A New Chapter for Malta’s Catholic Community
Mgr Załuski’s appointment comes at a time of significant change and growth for Malta’s Catholic community. The island, known for its strong Catholic traditions, is also a melting pot of cultures and ideas, with a vibrant youth scene and a growing interest in social justice and environmental issues.
In his first public address, Mgr Załuski spoke about the importance of dialogue and collaboration, themes that are sure to resonate with Malta’s diverse and engaged community. He also expressed his eagerness to learn about the island’s unique history and culture, a sentiment that has been echoed by locals looking forward to his tenure.
As Mgr Załuski settles into his new role, one thing is certain: Malta’s Catholic community is ready to embrace this new chapter, filled with hope, excitement, and a shared commitment to faith, dialogue, and unity.
“I am here to serve the Church in Malta, to listen, to learn, and to grow together with you,” Mgr Załuski said in his first address. It’s a sentiment that bodes well for the future of Malta’s Catholic community and the island’s continued growth as a beacon of faith, culture, and unity.
