New Apostolic Nuncio Mgr Wojciech Załuski: A Fresh Face in Malta’s Diplomatic Scene

Malta’s diplomatic scene has welcomed a new figure, as Mgr Wojciech Załuski, the new Apostolic Nuncio to Malta, touched down on our sunny shores last week. The Polish prelate, who has served in various diplomatic roles within the Vatican, brings a wealth of experience and a fresh perspective to our island nation.

From Rome to Valletta: A New Apostolic Nuncio

Mgr Załuski’s appointment was announced by the Holy See in late 2021, succeeding Archbishop Alberto Bottari de Castello who served as Apostolic Nuncio to Malta for over a decade. The new Nuncio arrives in Malta at a time when the Catholic Church is actively engaged in various social and pastoral initiatives, making his role pivotal in fostering dialogue and cooperation.

Born in 1964 in the Polish city of Rzeszów, Mgr Załuski has served in the Vatican’s diplomatic service since 1991. He has held various roles, including his most recent position as Under-Secretary for the Section for General Affairs of the Vatican’s Secretariat of State. His extensive diplomatic experience is set to bring a new dynamic to Malta’s religious and diplomatic scene.

First Impressions: A Low-Key Arrival

In typical Maltese fashion, Mgr Załuski’s arrival was a blend of warmth and understated elegance. He was welcomed by Archbishop Charles J. Scicluna and other high-ranking clergy at Malta International Airport. The new Nuncio then made his way to the Apostolic Nunciature, located in the heart of Valletta, where he will reside during his tenure.

In a brief statement, Mgr Załuski expressed his gratitude for the warm welcome and his eagerness to begin his mission in Malta. He also paid tribute to his predecessor, Archbishop Bottari de Castello, acknowledging his significant contributions to the Church in Malta.

: A New Chapter in Maltese-Vatican Relations

As Mgr Załuski settles into his new role, there’s much to look forward to. His diplomatic acumen and pastoral experience promise to strengthen the bond between Malta and the Holy See. With the upcoming celebrations of the 400th anniversary of the Wignacourt Aqueduct in Rabat, and the ongoing restoration projects at St. John’s Co-Cathedral, there’s no shortage of opportunities for the new Nuncio to engage with the local community and contribute to Malta’s rich cultural and religious heritage.

In the words of Mgr Załuski himself, “I am ready to serve the Church in Malta with humility and dedication, always seeking to promote the spiritual well-being of its faithful and the common good of the Maltese people.” With these sentiments, we welcome Mgr Wojciech Załuski and look forward to the positive impact he will undoubtedly have on Malta’s religious and diplomatic scene.
