New Apostolic Nuncio Mgr Wojciech Załuski Arrives in Malta: A Warm Welcome and a New Chapter
Malta’s St. Julian’s Bay, known for its bustling nightlife and picturesque sunset views, was not the only thing sparkling under the Mediterranean sun yesterday. The arrival of Mgr Wojciech Załuski, the new Apostolic Nuncio to Malta, brought a new gleam of excitement and anticipation to the island nation. The Polish prelate, who previously served as the Nuncio to Ireland, touched down at Malta International Airport, marking the beginning of a new chapter in the country’s rich religious history.
From Dublin to Valletta: A New Mission
Mgr Załuski’s appointment was announced by the Vatican in late 2021, but his arrival was delayed due to the pandemic. Now, with the world gradually reopening, the 57-year-old bishop has finally set foot on Maltese soil, ready to take up his new mission. He succeeds Archbishop Albert Pallagiano, who served as the Apostolic Nuncio to Malta from 2017 to 2021.
In an interview with Hot Malta, Mgr Załuski expressed his excitement about his new posting. “Malta is a country with a unique history and culture, deeply rooted in its Catholic faith. I am eager to contribute to the continued growth and vitality of the Church here,” he said, his words echoing the warm Maltese breeze that greeted him.
A Warm Welcome from the Maltese Church and Community
The Maltese Church and community have extended a warm welcome to the new Nuncio. Archbishop Charles Scicluna, the Archbishop of Malta, was among the first to greet Mgr Załuski upon his arrival. “We are delighted to welcome Mgr Załuski to Malta,” Archbishop Scicluna said. “His wealth of experience and deep faith will be a great asset to our Church.”
The Maltese public has also shown their enthusiasm, with many taking to social media to express their excitement and wish the new Nuncio a ‘Welcome to Malta’ (Malta Ħares).
: A New Chapter for the Maltese Church
As Mgr Załuski settles into his new role, he brings with him a wealth of experience and a fresh perspective. His appointment comes at a time when the Maltese Church is engaged in a process of renewal and reform, following the publication of the findings of the independent inquiry into allegations of abuse within the Church.
In his interview with Hot Malta, Mgr Załuski acknowledged the challenges facing the Church but expressed his confidence in the Maltese faithful. “The Maltese people have shown great resilience and faith in the face of adversity. I am confident that, together, we can navigate these challenges and emerge stronger,” he said.
As the sun sets on St. Julian’s Bay, casting a golden glow over the Mediterranean, a new chapter begins for the Maltese Church. With Mgr Wojciech Załuski at the helm, the future looks bright, filled with hope and promise.
“I look forward to getting to know the Maltese people and their unique culture,” Mgr Załuski said. “I am here to serve, to listen, and to learn. Together, we can build a stronger, more vibrant Church community.”
