Valletta Contemporary Unveils 2025 Vision
In the heart of Malta’s capital, where the ancient walls of Valletta whisper tales of centuries past, a new story is being written. The city’s contemporary art scene is buzzing with anticipation, as Valletta Contemporary has just unveiled its vision for the next five years, encapsulated in a sleek new publication.
Reflecting on the Present, Shaping the Future
Tucked away in the historic Triq St. Kristofru, Valletta Contemporary has been a beacon of Malta’s burgeoning art scene since 2017. The non-profit organisation has been instrumental in transforming the city’s cultural scene, and now, it’s to 2025 with a bold new programme.
Dubbed ‘Reflecting Forward’, the programme is a culmination of the organisation’s past achievements and a roadmap for its future. It’s not just about exhibitions and events; it’s about community engagement, artistic development, and solidifying Valletta’s place on the global art map.
From Local to Global: Valletta Contemporary’s Vision
Valletta Contemporary’s director, Dr. Annabelle Balzan, explains, “Our vision is to create a vibrant hub where local and international artists can collaborate, learn, and grow. We want to showcase Malta’s unique cultural identity while also connecting it to the wider world.”
The ‘Reflecting Forward’ programme aims to achieve this by increasing the number of international residencies, hosting high-profile exhibitions, and fostering community engagement through educational programmes and public events.
Highlights of the 2025 Programme
Some of the highlights include a series of solo exhibitions by established and emerging artists, both local and international. There are plans to expand the organisation’s educational outreach, with workshops, talks, and tours aimed at both students and the general public.
Valletta Contemporary is committed to supporting local artists. The ‘Emerging Artists’ programme will provide financial and mentoring support to promising Maltese talent, helping them to develop their skills and gain international exposure.
But it’s not just about art. Valletta Contemporary is also looking to engage with the wider community. The ‘Community Engagement’ strand of the programme will see the organisation working with local schools, NGOs, and other cultural institutions to create art projects that reflect and serve the community.
Dr. Balzan adds, “We want Valletta Contemporary to be more than just a gallery. We want it to be a place where people can come together, learn, create, and be inspired. We want it to be a reflection of our community, and a catalyst for its growth.”
With its ambitious ‘Reflecting Forward’ programme, Valletta Contemporary is set to continue its vital role in Malta’s cultural scene. As we look towards 2025, we can expect to see the organisation pushing boundaries, breaking barriers, and making its mark on the global art stage.
