3 Ways Momentum Aims to Help Domestic Violence Survivors in Malta

Three Proposals to Light the Path for Domestic Violence Survivors

In the heart of Valletta, at the doorstep of the historic Auberge de Castille, a woman steps out, her eyes scanning the bustling street, her heart pounding with a fear that doesn’t belong in this sunlit scene. She’s not alone. Every year, hundreds of Maltese women like her seek refuge from domestic violence, their lives turned upside down, their futures uncertain. But what if help was more accessible, more tailored to their needs? This is what Momentum, a local NGO, is proposing.

Breaking Down Barriers to Support

Momentum, based in the vibrant Msida, has long been a beacon of hope for victims of domestic violence. Now, they’re proposing three innovative measures to make their support more accessible and effective:

    • Virtual Safe Spaces: Imagine having a safe space to seek help, without leaving your home. Momentum proposes to create virtual safe spaces through an online platform, where victims can access information, chat with counselors, and even attend support groups without fear of being discovered.
    • Legal Aid on Demand: The legal process can be daunting, especially for those grappling with trauma. Momentum suggests establishing a system where legal aid is readily available, even at short notice. This could mean dedicated legal clinics in key locations like the law courts in Floriana or mobile legal aid units that travel to where the need is greatest.
    • Financial Independence Workshops: Financial dependence can trap victims in abusive relationships. Momentum proposes workshops focused on financial literacy and independence, empowering survivors to take control of their lives and plan for a future free from violence.

Navigating the System: A Local Perspective

For many victims, the biggest challenge is navigating the complex system of support services. Maria, a social worker at Momentum, shared, “We often hear from women who don’t know where to start. They’re overwhelmed, they’re scared, and they need clear, practical steps to get help.” The proposed measures aim to simplify this process, making help more accessible and less intimidating.

Community Action: We’re All Part of the Solution

Domestic violence affects us all, whether directly or indirectly. Momentum’s proposals remind us that we’re all part of the solution. Whether it’s donating to local NGOs, volunteering our time, or simply being there to listen, every action counts. As Dr. Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca, President of Malta’s Foundation for the Wellbeing of Society, puts it, “We must create a society where violence against women is not tolerated, and where every woman feels supported and empowered.”

So, what’s next? Momentum is calling on the government and local communities to support these proposals. They’re inviting us all to be part of the conversation, to share our ideas, and to work together towards a future where no woman lives in fear.
