District 5: Malta’s Hidden Cultural Gem

From Concrete to Culture: Unveiling District 5’s Hidden Gem

Ever found yourself stuck in traffic on Triq San Ġwann, staring at the towering concrete wall of the Marsa tunnel, and wondered what lies behind it? Welcome to District 5, Malta’s newest cultural hotspot, where urban decay meets artistic revival. This isn’t your typical Maltese neighbourhood; it’s a canvas of street art, a symphony of creative energy, and a testament to community spirit.

From Industrial Past to Artistic Present

Tucked away behind the Marsa tunnel, District 5 was once an industrial hub, home to factories and warehouses. But as industry moved on, the area fell into disrepair, its buildings left to crumble and its streets to echo with silence. That was until a group of local artists and activists decided to turn the tide.

In 2019, the ‘Behind the Tunnel’ project was born. Led by local NGO Art Council Malta, the project aimed to transform District 5 into an open-air gallery, a space where art could breathe life into derelict buildings and inspire community pride.

Art in Every Corner

Today, District 5 is a kaleidoscope of colour. Murals adorn crumbling walls, each one a story told through spray paint and stencils. There’s the iconic ‘Girl with a Pearl Earring’ by Maltese street artist DRIP, her image replicated on a grand scale on the side of a derelict factory. Nearby, you’ll find ‘The Fisherman’, a poignant tribute to Malta’s maritime heritage by local artist Martin Xuereb.

But District 5 isn’t just about the art on the walls. It’s about the community that’s grown around it. On weekends, the streets echo with the sound of laughter and music. Local artists open their studios to the public, while food trucks and market stalls line the streets. It’s a far cry from the quiet, forgotten neighbourhood it once was.

At the heart of District 5 is the Old Abattoir, a historic building that’s been transformed into a cultural hub. Here, you’ll find exhibitions, workshops, and events that celebrate everything from Maltese heritage to contemporary art.

: A Future Full of Colour

District 5’s transformation is far from over. Plans are in the pipeline to turn the area into a thriving creative district, complete with artist studios, galleries, and cultural spaces. There’s talk of a new public square, a place where the community can come together to celebrate art and culture.

“District 5 is more than just a collection of murals,” says Art Council Malta’s director, Mario Scerri. “It’s a testament to what can happen when a community comes together to reclaim their space. We’re not just painting walls here; we’re painting a future.”

So next time you’re stuck in traffic on Triq San Ġwann, take a moment to look beyond the concrete. Look ‘behind the tunnel’ and see the heart of District 5 beating with colour, creativity, and community spirit.
