Ex-Cannabis Cultivator Now Helps Drug Addicts in Malta

Cannabis Cultivator’s Unlikely Journey: From Arrest to Helping Drug Addicts

Imagine this: a man, arrested for cultivating cannabis, turns his life around and starts helping drug addicts. This isn’t a plot twist from a movie, but the real-life story of Mark, a 35-year-old Maltese man who found his purpose behind bars.

The Arrest and the Turning Point

Mark’s journey began in 2018 when police raided his apartment in St. Julian’s, seizing over 100 cannabis plants. He was arrested and sentenced to two years in prison. But it was during his time behind bars that Mark had an epiphany. “I saw firsthand the destruction drugs cause,” he told us, “I decided I wanted to help, not harm.”

From Prison to Rehabilitation Centre

Upon his release, Mark didn’t return to his old ways. Instead, he started volunteering at a local rehabilitation centre, Dar tal-Providenza. He began by helping with menial tasks, but his passion and dedication soon earned him a more significant role.

“Mark’s transformation is nothing short of remarkable,” says Dr. Maria Azzopardi, the centre’s director. “He’s become an invaluable member of our team, providing support and understanding to our residents that only someone who’s been through the system can.”

Mark now facilitates group therapy sessions, shares his story to deter others from following his past path, and even grows vegetables in the centre’s garden, teaching residents about the joys of nurturing life instead of destruction.

The Future: A Cannabis Café?

Mark’s ultimate dream is to open a cannabis café in Malta, where people can use cannabis recreationally and medicinally in a safe, controlled environment. He believes this could help reduce drug-related crimes and provide a space for open dialogue about cannabis use.

“I’ve seen both sides of the coin,” Mark says, “I know the damage drugs can cause, but I also know the potential good cannabis can do. I want to create a space where people can explore that potential responsibly.”

Mark’s story is a testament to the power of redemption and the importance of second chances. It’s a story that’s still unfolding, but one thing’s for sure – Mark is no longer just a man who cultivated cannabis. He’s a man who’s cultivating change.
