Malta’s Diving Community Mourns as Two Italians Lost at Sea in Maldives

Malta’s diving community is in mourning today as news reaches us from the Maldives of the recovery of the bodies of two Italian divers, both experienced and well-known in local waters. The men, identified as 45-year-old Marco R. and 38-year-old Luca G., were reported missing on Sunday after a diving expedition gone wrong.

Diving Incident in the Maldives

The incident occurred near the uninhabited island of Maafushi in the South Malé Atoll, where the two Italians were diving as part of a group. According to reports, the divers surfaced late and were not found despite an extensive search and rescue operation involving local authorities and nearby dive boats.

Sadly, their bodies were recovered yesterday, with officials confirming the tragic news. The Maldives Police Service expressed their condolences to the families and friends of the deceased.

Malta’s Diving Community Reacts

Back in Malta, the news has through the local diving community. Both men were regulars at local dive sites and were well-respected among their peers. Many took to social media to express their grief and share memories of diving with Marco and Luca.

John D., a fellow diver and friend of the deceased, told Hot Malta, “Marco and Luca were passionate about diving and always put safety first. We’re still trying to understand what could have gone wrong. Our thoughts are with their families.”

Marco and Luca were members of the Malta Sub-Aqua Club (MSAC), one of Malta’s largest diving clubs. The club has announced that it will be holding a memorial dive in their honor this Saturday at the Blue Hole in Gozo, inviting all divers to join and pay their respects.

Safety in Diving

While the cause of the incident is still under investigation, it serves as a stark reminder of the importance of safety in diving. Both men were experienced and certified divers, but even the most seasoned divers can face unexpected challenges underwater.

MSAC President, Anna L., urges all divers to prioritize safety, “Always dive within your limits, plan your dive and dive your plan. Never compromise on safety, no matter how experienced you are.”

Hot Malta will continue to update this story as more information becomes available. Our thoughts go out to the families and friends of Marco and Luca during this difficult time.
