Malta Mourns: Two Divers Lost at Sea Off Maldives
Malta’s Deepest Condolences: Two Italian Divers Lost at Sea Off Maldives
In the quiet, sun-kissed town of Marsaxlokk, Malta, the news spread like a chill on a summer’s day. Two Italian divers, part of a group that had set sail from our very shores, were lost at sea off the Maldives. The bodies of Andrea Colombo and Matteo Capuzzo were recovered yesterday, leaving their families and fellow divers in Malta grief-stricken.
The Journey Began in Malta
Andrea and Matteo were part of a group of experienced divers who embarked on a diving expedition from Malta’s Grand Harbour just a week ago. Their destination: the pristine waters of the Maldives, renowned for its vibrant marine life and thrilling dive sites. The group, comprising divers from Italy and Malta, had chartered a yacht for the journey, a common practice among experienced divers seeking adventure in the Indian Ocean.
The Tragedy Unfolds
On Tuesday, the group was diving at a site known as ‘The Shipyard’ in the Maldives’ North Ari Atoll. Suddenly, a strong current swept Andrea and Matteo away from their dive group. Despite immediate efforts to locate them, they were nowhere to be found. A massive search and rescue operation was launched, involving the Maldives National Defence Force, local dive centres, and even nearby tourist resorts. Sadly, their bodies were recovered two days later, about a kilometre away from the dive site.
The Maltese diving community is reeling from the news. “They were experienced divers, part of our close-knit community,” said Mark, a fellow diver and friend of the victims. “We’re all in shock. We’ve lost two of our own.”
Safety First: A Reminder for Divers
While the diving community mourns, it’s a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of the sea. “Always dive within your limits and never compromise on safety,” advises Dr. Joseph Caruana, a veteran diver and instructor based in St. Julian’s. “Check the weather, the currents, and always dive with a buddy.”
Malta’s Minister for Tourism, Clayton Bartolo, expressed his condolences, “Our thoughts are with the families and friends of Andrea and Matteo. We urge all divers to prioritise safety and always follow the guidelines set by certified dive centres.”
