Malta: Time to Put People Before Profit at the Polls

Voting with Our Hearts: A Plea for People Over Profit

Imagine, if you will, the bustling streets of Republic Street in Valletta, the heart of our beloved Malta. Picture the chatter of locals and tourists alike, the aroma of fresh pastizzi wafting from the nearby bakery, and the warm Mediterranean sun kissing the historic buildings. Now, envision this vibrant scene being slowly suffocated by towering, soulless high-rises, their glass facades reflecting nothing but the empty promises of greed.

This is not a dystopian fantasy, but a very real possibility if we, the people of Malta, do not stand up and demand a change in our political priorities. Our islands, once a beacon of culture and community, are increasingly becoming a playground for the wealthy and the powerful, with little regard for the everyday Maltese.

Profit Over People: A Tale of Two Cities

Take a stroll along the Sliema promenade, and you’ll see the stark contrast. On one hand, you have the quaint, traditional buildings that have weathered the test of time, their stories etched into the very stone. On the other, you have the glistening, modern apartments, their balconies filled with foreign faces, their owners unknown and unconcerned with the local community.

This is not to say that development is inherently bad. Malta, after all, is a small island nation with limited resources. But when development comes at the cost of our cultural heritage, our community spirit, and our very way of life, something is seriously amiss.

Discernment at the Polls: A Call to Action

We find ourselves at a crossroads. Our political scene is dominated by parties more concerned with lining the pockets of their cronies than with the well-being of the Maltese people. But we, the voters, hold the power. We can demand better. We can vote for better.

We must look beyond the empty promises and flashy campaigns. We must ask ourselves, who truly represents our interests? Who will fight to preserve our heritage, to protect our communities, and to ensure that Malta remains a home for all Maltese, not just a playground for the wealthy?

Let us not forget that we are more than just voters. We are the heart and soul of Malta. We are the ones who make our islands truly special. And it is high time we started acting like it.

So, as you stand in line at the polling station, remember the words of the late, great Maltese poet Dun Karm: “Maltin, għandek jkunx ta’ ħażin, u għandek jkunx ta’ ħażin.” (Maltese, be proud of being Maltese, and be proud of being Maltese.)

Let us vote with our hearts. Let us vote for Malta. Let us vote for us.
