Malta’s Eco-Innovators: Upcycled Towels & Hearing Tech Bag Top Prize
Imagine this: a bustling hall at the University of Malta, filled with the hum of excitement and the whir of innovative ideas. Among the crowd, two teams stand out, their creations set to make waves in Malta’s entrepreneurial scene. One, turning waste into stylish towels; the other, revolutionizing hearing technology. This is the story of Malta’s latest student entrepreneurship triumph.
From Landfill to Luxury: Upcycled Towels
Meet GreenGown, the brainchild of three University of Malta students. Their mission? To turn textile waste into high-quality, upcycled towels. Picture this: a towel, soft to the touch, vibrant in colour, and once a humble piece of discarded clothing. GreenGown’s process involves collecting old clothes, cleaning them, and transforming them into luxurious, eco-friendly towels.
But it’s not just about the product. GreenGown is a social enterprise, with a heart for the community. They’re based in Marsa, Malta’s industrial hub, where they employ local people, providing them with a second chance at employment. Their towels, too, are sold locally, supporting Malta’s economy while reducing textile waste.
Hearing the Future: Innovative Tech
Now, let’s turn our attention to HearMe, another University of Malta team. Their creation? A cutting-edge, affordable hearing aid that connects to smartphones, offering a world of sound to those with hearing loss. Picture this: a sleek, discreet device, tucked behind the ear, transforming the lives of Malta’s hearing-impaired community.
HearMe’s innovation lies in its affordability and connectivity. Traditional hearing aids can cost thousands, putting them out of reach for many. HearMe, however, is set to retail at around €300, making it accessible to all. Plus, its Bluetooth connectivity allows users to stream calls, music, and other audio directly from their smartphones.
Top Prize & Next Steps
GreenGown and HearMe were crowned winners of the University of Malta’s Entrepreneurship Challenge, bagging €10,000 each to kickstart their ventures. But their journey doesn’t end here. Both teams are now set to join BetaCave, Malta’s leading startup incubator, for mentorship and support.
GreenGown’s founders, excited about their win, told us, “We can’t wait to expand our production, reach more customers, and make a real difference in Malta’s textile waste problem.” HearMe, meanwhile, is eager to start clinical trials and bring their innovative hearing aid to market.
So, what’s next for these eco-innovators and tech disruptors? . But one thing’s for sure: Malta’s student entrepreneurs are making waves, and we can’t wait to see what they do next.
