Malta’s Eco-Innovators: Upcycled Towels & Hearing Tech Nab Top Student Prize

Imagine this: a bustling lecture hall at the University of Malta, filled with the usual hum of anticipation. But today, the air is charged with something extra – the electric buzz of innovation. Two student-led startups are about to be crowned the winners of the prestigious Student Entrepreneurship Scheme. And the winners are… EcoTowel and HearMe!

EcoTowel: Turning Waste into Luxury

Meet EcoTowel, the brainchild of three textile design students who’ve turned the humble hotel towel into a symbol of sustainability. Their secret? Upcycling. They collect discarded towels from local hotels – think The Westin Dragonara Resort and Hotel Phoenicia – and give them a new lease of life as stylish, eco-friendly homeware.

But EcoTowel isn’t just about recycling. It’s about creating jobs too. The startup employs local artisans to handcraft their products, providing fair wages and training opportunities. “We’re not just reducing waste,” says co-founder Maria Azzopardi, “we’re creating a circular economy right here in Malta.”

HearMe: Tech for Accessibility

While EcoTowel is making waves in the textile industry, HearMe is revolutionizing the way we think about hearing aids. Founded by a group of engineering students, HearMe has developed a low-cost, high-impact hearing aid that connects to smartphones, offering users a world of audio possibilities.

HearMe’s tech isn’t just advanced, it’s accessible. The startup has partnered with local NGOs like the Malta Association of the Deaf to ensure their product reaches those who need it most. “We want to break down barriers,” says co-founder David Attard, “and make hearing technology affordable and accessible to everyone in Malta.”

Winning Big, Giving Back

The Student Entrepreneurship Scheme isn’t just about winning money – although EcoTowel and HearMe did walk away with €5,000 each. It’s about turning ideas into reality, and making a positive impact on Malta. Both startups plan to use their prize money to expand their operations, create more jobs, and give back to the community.

“This win is more than just a prize,” says Maria, “it’s a vote of confidence in our vision. We can’t wait to see what the future holds for EcoTowel.”

As for HearMe, David is equally optimistic. “We’re not just building a business,” he says, “we’re building a future where everyone can hear and be heard. And that’s something worth fighting for.”

So, what’s next for these eco-innovators? . But one thing’s for sure – they’re not just making waves in Malta’s startup scene. They’re making a difference.
