Malta’s Student Entrepreneurs Transform Beach Towels & Hearing Tech
From Beach Towels to Hearing Aids: Malta’s Student Entrepreneurs Make Waves
Imagine transforming old, worn-out beach towels into stylish, eco-friendly bags. Or picture enhancing the lives of the hearing impaired with innovative, affordable technology. These are not just ideas, but realities created by Malta’s budding entrepreneurs, who have just won the prestigious Student Entrepreneurship Prize.
Upcycling at the Beach: Green & Chic
Meet the team behind Beach2Bag, a startup that’s turning heads and reducing waste along Malta’s sunny shores. Led by 22-year-old marketing student, Daniel Azzopardi, the team collects discarded towels from beaches like Golden Bay and Ghajn Tuffieha, giving them a new life as trendy, upcycled bags.
“We’re not just cleaning up our beaches,” says Daniel, “we’re creating jobs, reducing waste, and promoting Malta’s green side. Our bags are now sold in local shops and online, and we’re expanding our product range too.”
Hearing Tech: Affordable and Accessible
Another winning team, HearMe, is making waves in the hearing aid industry. Led by 23-year-old engineering student, Maria Galea, they’ve developed an affordable, user-friendly hearing aid that connects to smartphones, offering features like noise cancellation and customizable settings.
“Hearing aids are expensive and often outdated,” explains Maria. “We wanted to create something modern, affordable, and tailored to the user. With HearMe, people can enjoy better hearing without breaking the bank.”
Winning Big, Giving Back
The winners were announced at the Student Entrepreneurship Awards held at the University of Malta’s Valletta Campus. Apart from the cash prize, Beach2Bag and HearMe will also receive mentorship and incubation support from MCST – Malta Council for Science and Technology.
For these young entrepreneurs, the prize is more than just recognition. It’s a stepping stone to create jobs, reduce waste, and improve lives in Malta. As Daniel puts it, “This is just the beginning. We’re excited to grow, create more opportunities, and make Malta a greener, more inclusive place.”
Maria echoes this sentiment, “We’re not just building a product, we’re building a community. A community where everyone can hear, connect, and participate fully in life.”
