Malta’s Student Entrepreneurs Win Big with Upcycled Towels & Hearing Tech
From Beach Towels to Hearing Aids: Malta’s Student Entrepreneurs Make Waves
Imagine this: a bustling street in Paceville, the heart of Malta’s nightlife, filled with the usual chatter of tourists and locals. Now, imagine that chatter growing clearer, more distinct, for someone who’s been struggling to hear it. This isn’t magic; it’s the work of two Maltese students who’ve turned their passion into a prize-winning business.
Upcycling with a Cause: Towels for Change
Meet Marisa Azzopardi and Daniela Camilleri, the duo behind Towels for Change. These two University of Malta students have transformed old, discarded beach towels into stylish, eco-friendly bags, all while giving back to the community. Their workshop, tucked away in a quiet corner of Msida, is a testament to their dedication and creativity.
“We started this project to reduce textile waste and give back to our community,” Marisa explains. “We collect old towels from hotels and beaches, clean them, and upcycle them into functional, trendy bags.”
Hearing Technology with a Heart: AudioSense
While Marisa and Daniela were busy turning trash into treasure, another pair of students was working on a different kind of transformation. Matthew Azzopardi and Andrew Vella created AudioSense, a device that improves hearing aid performance using artificial intelligence.
“We noticed that hearing aids often struggle in noisy environments,” Matthew says. “So, we developed an AI algorithm that can differentiate between speech and background noise, making conversations clearer for hearing aid users.”
Their prototype, a small, discreet device that clips onto hearing aids, has already made a significant difference in the lives of test users. “It’s been incredible to see the impact our work has on people,” Andrew adds.
Winning Big: The Junior Achievement Malta Competition
Both startups recently won top prizes at the Junior Achievement Malta Company of the Year Competition. The event, held at the Millennium Chapel in St. Julian’s, saw these young entrepreneurs pitch their ideas to a panel of judges and an audience of local business leaders.
“Winning this competition has given us a huge boost of confidence and validation,” Marisa says. “It’s shown us that our ideas have potential, and that people believe in what we’re doing.”
Matthew agrees, “This win has opened up new opportunities for us. We’re now looking into partnerships with hearing aid manufacturers and exploring ways to commercialize our technology.”
As the sun sets over the Maltese coastline, the future looks bright for these young entrepreneurs. Their innovative ideas, coupled with their passion and dedication, are set to make waves in Malta’s business scene.
So, the next time you’re in Paceville, or any other bustling street in Malta, take a moment to appreciate the ingenuity of its young residents. You might just spot a Towels for Change bag or meet someone whose life has been improved by AudioSense.
