Malta’s Top Student Entrepreneurs: Upcycled Towels & Hearing Tech Win Big

From Beach Towels to Hearing Aids: Malta’s Top Student Entrepreneurs

Imagine this: a beach towel that’s seen better days, given a new lease of life, and now adorns a hotel room in Sliema. Or a pair of hearing aids, sleek and modern, helping someone in Valletta hear the world with crystal clarity. These aren’t just ordinary towels and hearing devices; they’re the brainchildren of Malta’s top student entrepreneurs.

Upcycling with a Cause

Meet the team behind ReTowel, a startup that’s turning old beach towels into stylish, upcycled ones. Led by 22-year-old marketing student, Maria Xuereb, the team collects discarded towels from hotels around Sliema and St. Julian’s. They then transform them into unique, eco-friendly products, giving them a new life and reducing textile waste.

“We’re not just creating products,” says Maria, “We’re telling a story. Each towel has a history, and we’re giving it a new chapter.” Their towels, now available in several Sliema hotels, are a hit with tourists and locals alike.

Hearing Tech with a Modern Twist

Another winner is HearMe, a startup developing sleek, affordable hearing aids. Led by 23-year-old engineering student, Daniel Azzopardi, the team is challenging the traditional hearing aid industry, which is often criticized for its high prices and outdated designs.

Daniel, who has a family history of hearing loss, saw a gap in the market. “Hearing aids shouldn’t be big, bulky, and expensive,” he says. “They should be discreet, affordable, and connected to today’s technology.” HearMe’s prototypes, currently being tested in Valletta, promise just that.

Winning Big at the MIT Enterprise Forum

Both startups won big at the Malta Innovation and Technology Awards, organized by the MIT Enterprise Forum. They beat out stiff competition, impressing judges with their innovative ideas, business models, and potential impact on Malta.

Maria and Daniel attribute their success to their passion, the support of their universities, and Malta’s growing entrepreneurial ecosystem. “Malta’s small, but it’s mighty,” says Daniel. “There’s a real sense of community among startups here.”

Maria agrees, “We might be small, but we’re nimble. And that’s our strength. We can pivot quickly, learn from our mistakes, and keep moving forward.”

As for the future, both teams are looking to scale up. ReTowel plans to expand its collection points and product range, while HearMe is aiming to launch its first product line by the end of the year.

So, the next time you see a stylish towel in a Sliema hotel or spot someone in Valletta wearing sleek hearing aids, remember: Malta’s student entrepreneurs are changing the game, one towel and one hearing aid at a time.
