Malta’s Top Student Entrepreneurs: Upcycled Towels & Hearing Tech Win Big
From Beach Towels to Hearing Aids: Meet Malta’s Top Student Entrepreneurs
Imagine this: a group of students, armed with nothing but creativity, determination, and a desire to make a difference, standing on the stage of the Mediterranean Conference Centre in Valletta. They’re not there to receive academic awards, but to collect the top prize at the annual Malta Student Entrepreneur of the Year Awards. This year’s winners? A duo who turned beach towels into eco-friendly fashion statements and a team that’s revolutionising hearing technology. Let’s dive into their inspiring stories.
Upcycling Waves: Beach Towels Get a Green Makeover
Meet Rebecca and Daniel, two University of Malta students who turned their shared love for the ocean into a sustainable business. Their venture, Upcycle Waves, transforms old beach towels into stylish, upcycled fashion accessories and home decor. You can spot their colourful creations at local markets like the ones held at Pjazza Tritoni in Sliema.
“We wanted to do our part for the environment while also creating something beautiful,” says Rebecca. Their products, like the vibrant beach towel tote bags sold at these markets, are a testament to their commitment. Each one is unique, just like the waves that inspired them.
Hearing Tech Gets a Boost with AudioBoost
Another winning team, AudioBoost, is making waves in a different field: hearing technology. Led by engineering students from the University of Malta, this team developed a portable, affordable hearing aid that connects to smartphones via Bluetooth. Their innovative device, designed with local audiologists, is set to improve the lives of many Maltese individuals struggling with hearing loss.
“We realised that hearing aids are expensive and often not accessible to those who need them,” explains team captain, Matthew. “We wanted to change that.” AudioBoost plans to launch their product later this year, with trials already underway at the Mater Dei Hospital’s audiology department.
Supporting Local Innovation
The Malta Student Entrepreneur of the Year Awards, organised by the Foundation for Social Entrepreneurs, celebrates and supports young innovators like Rebecca, Daniel, Matthew, and their teams. This year’s edition, held at the Mediterranean Conference Centre, saw over 100 students pitching their ideas to a panel of judges.
“These students are the future of Malta’s entrepreneurship scene,” says Dr. Maria Pisani, director of the Foundation. “Their creativity, passion, and commitment are truly inspiring.” The winners received €5,000 in seed funding, mentorship, and access to incubation programmes to help them grow their ventures.
As we look ahead, let’s keep an eye on these young entrepreneurs. They’re not just creating businesses; they’re creating a better, greener, and more inclusive Malta. Let’s support them, buy their products, and share their stories. Because when our students succeed, Malta succeeds.
Rebecca, summing up their journey, says, “We started this because we believed in our idea and wanted to make a difference. Winning this award is just the beginning. We’re excited about what’s next.”
