Mellieħa’s Golden Bay: Battle for Beach
Mellieħa’s Golden Bay: A Battle for the Beach
Imagine standing on the sun-kissed sands of Golden Bay, Mellieħa, the Mediterranean stretching out before you. Now, picture a towering hotel blocking that view. This isn’t a dystopian dream, but a reality residents and environmentalists are fighting to prevent.
From Public to Private: The Site’s History
Once a public space, the site in question was handed over to a developer by the previous government in 2016. The plan? To build a five-star hotel and luxury apartments. Locals, however, argue that this goes against the original promise to keep the area free from high-rise buildings.
The site, located just off Triq il-Mellieħa, is part of a larger stretch of land that was meant to be protected under the 2016 Local Plan. Yet, it was mysteriously excluded, sparking outrage among residents and environmental groups.
Environmental Concerns: More Than a View
It’s not just about the view. The site is home to unique flora and fauna, including the endangered Maltese wall lizard. Construction would also mean digging into the sand dunes, which act as a natural barrier against coastal erosion.
“Golden Bay is one of the last remaining stretches of untouched coastline in Malta,” says Dr. Simon Mercieca, a local environmentalist. “Losing this site would be a devastating blow to our natural heritage.”
Community Backlash and Legal Battles
The proposed development has sparked a backlash among Mellieħa residents. Petitions have been circulating, and protests have been held, with locals calling on the government to intervene.
In 2019, the case took a legal turn when the environmental NGO, Nature Trust (Malta), filed a judicial protest. The case is still ongoing, with the next hearing scheduled for later this year.
Meanwhile, the developer has submitted a revised proposal, reducing the number of apartments but increasing the hotel’s size. However, environmentalists argue that any development on the site is unacceptable.
What’s Next?
The ball is now in the government’s court. Will they stand by their election promises to protect Malta’s environment and listen to the voice of the people? Or will they allow this piece of Mellieħa’s coastline to be lost forever?
As Dr. Mercieca puts it, “This is a test of our government’s commitment to environmental protection. We’re watching, and we hope they make the right choice.”
