Minister Under Fire: Defending Construction Safety Record After Naxxar Incident

In the heart of Naxxar, a small town in the north of Malta, a construction site has become the focal point of a heated debate. A recent incident, where a wall collapsed injuring workers, has sparked questions about construction safety standards. Now, the Minister responsible is defending his track record, claiming that safety is a top priority.

Wall Collapse in Naxxar: The Incident that Sparked Concern

On a warm Tuesday morning, a wall at a construction site on Triq l-Imqaddes in Naxxar suddenly gave way, sending debris crashing down and injuring three workers. The incident, captured on a nearby CCTV, has since gone viral, fueling public anxiety about construction safety. The site, a new apartment block, is one of many ongoing construction projects across the island nation.

The incident has raised eyebrows, given that Malta’s construction sector has been booming, with numerous high-rise projects springing up, especially in urban areas. With this growth, concerns about safety standards have been simmering, and the Naxxar incident has brought them to a boil.

Minister’s Response: Safety is “Non-Negotiable”

Minister for Finance and Economy, and responsible for Construction, Prof. Edward Scicluna, has been quick to respond to the outcry. In a press conference held at the Parliament Building in Valletta, he asserted, “Safety is non-negotiable. We have strict regulations, and we expect them to be followed to the letter.”

The Minister pointed to the recent introduction of the Construction Safety, Health and Welfare Authority (CSHWA) as a testament to the government’s commitment to safety. He also highlighted the mandatory safety training for workers and the regular inspections conducted by the authority.

However, when pressed about the Naxxar incident, the Minister admitted that “mistakes can happen, even with the best systems in place.” He promised a thorough investigation into the incident and vowed that those responsible would be held accountable.

Industry Reactions: Calls for Stricter Enforcement

The reaction from the construction industry has been mixed. While some industry players have echoed the Minister’s sentiments about safety being paramount, others have called for stricter enforcement of existing regulations.

Joseph Borg, a veteran construction worker from Msida, told Hot Malta, “We need more than just regulations on paper. We need stricter penalties for those who cut corners and put lives at risk.” Meanwhile, construction company owner, Mario Debono, based in Birkirkara, argued, “We need to invest more in training and education. It’s not just about penalties; it’s about changing the culture of safety.”

In the meantime, the Naxxar site has been temporarily closed, and the injured workers are receiving treatment at Mater Dei Hospital. The CSHWA has launched an investigation into the incident, with results expected in the coming weeks.
