Three Steps Forward: Momentum’s Plan to Aid Domestic Violence Survivors

In the heart of Valletta, nestled in the bustling Republic Street, lies the Momentum Centre. This unassuming building houses a team of dedicated professionals who have just proposed three groundbreaking initiatives to support victims of domestic violence in Malta. But what does this mean for the island’s fight against domestic abuse?

Understanding the scene

Malta, like many other societies, grapples with domestic violence. According to the Malta Police, there were 1,145 cases reported in 2020 alone. However, these figures only scratch the surface, as many incidents go unreported. The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the situation, with lockdowns often trapping victims with their abusers.

Momentum, a non-governmental organisation providing support services to victims of domestic violence, has been at the forefront of this battle. Now, they’re taking a significant step forward with three innovative proposals.

Proposal 1: The Safe Space Initiative

Momentum’s first proposal is the Safe Space Initiative. This innovative idea aims to create safe havens for victims in public spaces across Malta. These spaces, located in strategic places like libraries, community centres, and even shops, would allow victims to discreetly seek help.

Imagine a victim, trapped in an abusive relationship, finding solace in a quiet corner of the Public Library in Floriana. There, they could discreetly reach out to a Momentum counsellor via a dedicated helpline. This could be their first step towards safety and support.

Proposal 2: The Digital Escape Route

The Digital Escape Route is Momentum’s second proposal. This initiative seeks to us technology to aid victims. It involves creating a secure, encrypted digital platform where victims can access information, seek advice, and even report incidents.

In a world where many of us live our lives online, this proposal recognises the digital divide that can trap victims. With a smartphone and an internet connection, a victim could access vital support, even if they’re isolated at home with their abuser.

Proposal 3: The Community Response Network

Momentum’s final proposal is the Community Response Network. This initiative aims to educate and empower communities to respond effectively to domestic violence. It involves training community leaders, teachers, and even shopkeepers to recognise signs of abuse and provide appropriate support.

Picture a shopkeeper in Birkirkara, trained to spot the signs of abuse, who notices a regular customer showing signs of distress. They could then discreetly offer support, providing a lifeline to a victim who might otherwise suffer in silence.

Momentum’s proposals are bold, innovative, and above all, practical. They recognise the complexities of domestic abuse and offer real-world solutions. As these initiatives move forward, it’s crucial that we, as a community, support them. We must also continue to challenge the stigma surrounding domestic violence, ensuring that victims feel empowered to seek help.

“We’re not just fighting for change, we’re creating it,” says Dr. Simone Borg, Director of Momentum. “These proposals are about making help accessible, visible, and most importantly, safe.”
