PN Chatbot’s Fishy Visuals: Oil Rigs & Harbour Giants in Malta’s Future?

PN Chatbot’s Fishy Visuals: Oil Rigs and Harbour Giants in Malta’s Future?

Imagine this: Malta’s horizon dotted with towering oil rigs, our harbours expanded to mammoth proportions. This isn’t a scene from a dystopian film, but rather, the ‘vision’ painted by the Labour Party’s (PL) chatbot on its official Facebook page. The chatbot, designed to engage voters ahead of the upcoming elections, has sparked a storm of controversy with its flawed images of proposed developments.

From Chatbot to Headlines

The chatbot, named ‘LabourBot’, was launched with much fanfare, promising to answer voters’ queries and showcase the PL’s achievements. However, it’s the chatbot’s visual representations of proposed projects that have grabbed headlines, and not in a good way. The images, depicting oil rigs off Malta’s coast and expanded harbours, have been met with disbelief and criticism, with many questioning their authenticity and feasibility.

Oil Rigs: A Slippery Slope?

Malta’s relationship with oil exploration is a complex one. While the PL has hinted at the possibility of oil drilling in Maltese waters, the idea of oil rigs dotting our horizon has been met with resistance. Environmental concerns, aesthetic impacts, and fears of an ‘oil curse’ have all been raised. The chatbot’s image, showing oil rigs off the coast of Marsaxlokk, a popular fishing village and tourist spot, has only served to fuel these concerns.

Dr. Joseph Galea Debono, a geologist and environmentalist, raises a red flag. “Oil drilling in Maltese waters is a slippery slope. We’re a small island with a fragile ecosystem. The risks far outweigh the benefits,” he warns.

Harbour Giants: A Port Too Far?

The chatbot’s image of expanded harbours has also raised eyebrows. While the PL has proposed plans to expand Malta Freeport and Grand Harbour, the chatbot’s depiction of these projects has been criticized as exaggerated and unrealistic. The image shows vast, industrial-looking harbours that bear little resemblance to the historic, picturesque ports we know today.

Architect and urban planner, Dr. Alex Torpiano, expresses his concern. “Our harbours are part of our cultural heritage. Any expansion should respect their historical and architectural context. The chatbot’s image suggests a lack of sensitivity towards our built heritage,” he says.

Chatbot Gaffe or Policy Preview?

The question on everyone’s lips is whether the chatbot’s images are a gaffe or a preview of the PL’s future plans. The party has been quick to distance itself from the images, attributing them to a ‘technical error’. However, the damage has been done, with the opposition Nationalist Party (PN) seizing on the issue and accusing the PL of trying to ‘pull the wool over our eyes’.

PN spokesperson, Dr. David Agius, is scathing. “These images are not a mistake. They’re a glimpse into the PL’s vision for Malta – industrial, polluted, and completely out of touch with what Maltese people want,” he claims.

As the election approaches, the chatbot’s images have become a hot topic of debate. They’ve sparked conversations about Malta’s future, about development versus environment, and about the role of technology in politics. One thing’s for sure – LabourBot has certainly lived up to its name, generating a lot of buzz, albeit not quite in the way the PL might have hoped.

As for the images themselves, they’ve been removed from the chatbot’s page. But the questions they’ve raised remain, hanging in the air like a thick, oily mist. whether they were a mistake, a misunderstanding, or a sneak peek into Malta’s future.
