‘Stories Revisited’: A nostalgic portrait of growing up in Malta

Remember the scent of freshly baked Ħobż biż-Żejt wafting through the air as you walked home from school? Or the echo of your laughter bouncing off the ancient walls of Mdina’s silent streets as you played tag with your friends? These are the memories that Malta’s own, Stories Revisited, is bringing back to life.

Uncovering Malta’s Childhood Tales

Launched in 2016, Stories Revisited is a Facebook page dedicated to collecting and sharing stories from Malta’s past. From tales of childhood mischief to accounts of life during World War II, each post is a window into the island’s rich history. Behind every story is a piece of Malta’s identity, waiting to be rediscovered.

Take, for instance, the story of the day I ran away from home. It’s a tale of a young boy’s adventure, filled with humor and nostalgia. It’s also a testament to a time when Malta was a different place, a place where a child could wander freely and safely.

From Facebook to the Streets of Malta

But Stories Revisited isn’t just about reminiscing. It’s about preserving Malta’s history, one story at a time. And that’s why, in 2019, they took their mission to the streets. They started organizing walking tours in Mdina, Valletta, and other historic sites, bringing the stories to life in the very places where they happened.

Imagine standing in the silent, cobbled streets of Mdina, listening to stories of childhood games played there decades ago. Or walking through the bustling streets of Valletta, hearing tales of wartime courage from the very people who lived through it. That’s the magic of Stories Revisited’s walking tours.

Preserving Malta’s Past for Future Generations

Stories Revisited isn’t just about the past. It’s about the future too. By collecting and sharing these stories, they’re ensuring that Malta’s history isn’t lost to time. They’re making sure that future generations can look back and understand where they come from.

And they’re not doing it alone. Stories Revisited has a community of over 15,000 followers, each contributing their own stories and memories. It’s a testament to the power of shared history, to the bond that these stories create between us.

So, whether you’re a born and bred Maltese or a newcomer to the island, Stories Revisited has a story for you. A story that will make you laugh, make you think, and make you appreciate the rich mix Malta’s history. And who knows? You might even have a story of your own to share.

As Stories Revisited founder, Joanna Ellul, puts it, “Every story is a piece of our collective memory. And every memory deserves to be told.”
