Student Innovation: Upcycled Towels & Hearing Tech Win Top Prize
From Beach to Boardroom: Upcycled Towels & Hearing Tech Bag Top Student Entrepreneurship Prize
Imagine this: a towel you’ve used on Malta’s golden sands, now transformed into a stylish, eco-friendly bag. This is not a beach dream, but a reality created by two University of Malta students who have just bagged the top prize at the annual Student Entrepreneurship Awards. The innovative duo, together with a team developing groundbreaking hearing technology, have shown that student innovation in Malta is more than just talk.
Beach Waste to Fashion Statement
Meet Marthese and Daniel, the brains behind ‘ReTowel’, an upcycling project that turns old beach towels into trendy bags. Their journey began on the very beaches they now aim to clean up. “We saw so many towels left behind, and we thought, why not give them a new life?” Marthese explained, her eyes sparkling with the same enthusiasm that fuels their project.
ReTowel isn’t just about creating cool bags; it’s about reducing waste and promoting sustainability. The project has partnered with local hotels and beach clubs to collect old towels, giving them a new purpose and keeping them out of landfills. “We’re not just making bags,” Daniel chipped in, “we’re making a statement about waste reduction and sustainability.”
Hearing the Future
While ReTowel is turning waste into fashion, another student team is revolutionizing the way we hear the world. ‘AudEar’ has developed a cutting-edge hearing aid that’s not only more effective but also more affordable. Led by engineering student, Alex, the team has been working tirelessly in the university’s labs to perfect their prototype.
“We wanted to make hearing aids more accessible and less visible,” Alex said, holding up the tiny device. “We’ve achieved that, and our early tests show it’s as effective as current models, if not more.” AudEar’s innovation could significantly improve the lives of Malta’s hearing impaired community, making it a standout project in this year’s awards.
Winning Big
The Student Entrepreneurship Awards, organized by the University of Malta’s Entrepreneurship & Innovation Centre, celebrate and support student-led startups. This year’s top prize, a €5,000 grant and a year’s worth of mentorship, was awarded to ReTowel and AudEar jointly, reflecting the judges’ admiration for both projects’ potential and impact.
“We’re thrilled to see such innovative, sustainable, and socially responsible ideas coming from our students,” said Prof. Godwin Mallia, Director of the Entrepreneurship & Innovation Centre. “These projects show that student innovation in Malta is not just about app development or tech startups. It’s about solving real-world problems, here and now.”
As ReTowel and AudEar prepare to launch their products, Malta watches with anticipation. These student entrepreneurs are not just winning awards; they’re creating a future where waste is repurposed, hearing loss is less of a barrier, and student innovation is a driving force for change.
