Valletta Truck Fire: Driver Denies Arson

Truck Fire Puzzle: Man Denies Arson in Valletta Blaze

In the heart of Valletta, the capital’s main thoroughfare, Republic Street, was a scene of chaos and smoke last Tuesday. A bowser truck, parked near the historic St. John’s Co-Cathedral, went up in flames, sending plumes of black smoke into the air and causing traffic mayhem. The fire, which took firefighters over an hour to extinguish, has left the public and authorities scratching their heads, as the truck’s driver has denied any wrongdoing.

Fire in the City

The incident occurred around midday, with eyewitnesses reporting a loud explosion before the truck was engulfed in flames. “It was like a bomb went off,” said Joseph, a local shopkeeper who witnessed the event. “The fire spread so quickly, it was terrifying.” The blaze not only caused significant damage to the truck but also led to the temporary closure of nearby shops and offices due to smoke inhalation concerns.

Fire services, along with police, quickly arrived at the scene. They managed to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to nearby buildings. No injuries were reported, but the cause of the fire remains a mystery.

Driver’s Denial

The truck’s driver, 45-year-old Malta resident Mario Azzopardi, was taken in for questioning. However, he has since been released without charge, maintaining his innocence. “I swear, I didn’t start that fire,” Azzopardi told Hot Malta. “I parked the truck, went to grab a quick lunch, and when I came back, it was up in flames.” Azzopardi has been a truck driver for over two decades and has a clean record.

Police are treating the incident as suspicious, given the lack of an apparent cause for the fire. They are currently investigating all angles, including the possibility of arson. “We’re looking into all possibilities,” said Inspector Ian Azzopardi of the Malta Police. “Until we have concrete evidence, we cannot rule out any scenario.”

Community Reaction

The incident has sparked concern and speculation among Valletta residents and businesses. “We can’t have this happening in our city,” said Anna Maria, a local café owner. “It’s not just the damage, it’s the fear it instills. We need answers.” Others have taken to social media, expressing their worry and calling for a swift resolution.

Valletta 2018 Foundation, the organisation responsible for the cultural programme leading up to Malta’s European Capital of Culture title, has also weighed in. “We’re monitoring the situation closely,” said a spokesperson. “Valletta’s safety and security are paramount, especially as we approach our cultural events later this year.”

As the investigation continues, the public is urged to come forward with any information that might help solve the case. In the meantime, Valletta residents and businesses are left wondering who, or what, caused the truck to go up in flames.
