Voting Document MIA? Here’s How to Collect It in Malta
Imagine this: it’s the day before the local council elections, and you’re frantically searching for your voting document. You’ve turned your home upside down, but it’s nowhere to be found. Don’t panic, you’re not alone. Let’s navigate this together and ensure your voice is heard.
First Things First: Check Your Address
Before you start your search, double-check that you’re registered at the correct address. You can do this by visiting the Elections Commission website and using their online voter search tool. If you’ve recently moved, make sure your new address is updated in their system.
Collecting Your Voting Document
If your address is correct and you still haven’t received your voting document, it’s time to collect it in person. Here’s where you can go:
- For residents of the 6 local councils (Birkirkara, Bormla, Msida, Qormi, Rabat, and Żebbuġ), head to the Elections Commission Office in Floriana. It’s open from 8:30 AM to 1:30 PM, Monday to Friday.
- For residents of the other local councils, you can collect your voting document from your respective local council’s office. The opening hours vary, so it’s best to check their website or give them a call.
Remember to bring a valid form of identification with you. This could be your ID card, passport, or driving license.
What If You’re Abroad or Unable to Collect In Person?
If you’re currently abroad or unable to collect your voting document in person, don’t worry. You can still vote. Here’s what you need to do:
- If you’re abroad, you can apply for a postal vote. You’ll need to fill in an application form and send it to the Elections Commission. The deadline for applications is 10 days before the election.
- If you’re unable to collect your voting document in person, you can apply for a proxy vote. This means you appoint someone you trust to vote on your behalf. The deadline for proxy vote applications is 7 days before the election.
For more information on postal and proxy votes, visit the Elections Commission website.
Don’t Miss Out on Your Chance to Vote
Voting is a fundamental right and responsibility. It’s how we choose our local councillors and shape our communities. So, if you’ve misplaced your voting document, don’t let that stop you from casting your vote. With a little effort, you can still make your voice heard.
Remember, the local council elections are on May 23, 2023. Polling stations will be open from 7:00 AM to 10:00 PM. If you’re not sure where your polling station is, you can find out by using the online voter search tool.
