Wave of Change Launches New Campaign at Xrobb l-Għaġin
Waves of Change: A New Tide of Awareness at Xrobb l-Għaġin
Imagine standing on the rugged cliffs of Xrobb l-Għaġin, the Mediterranean sprawling out before you, its waves crashing against the rocks below. Now, picture those waves not just as a natural phenomenon, but as a symbol of change, of a new tide of awareness sweeping across Malta. This Saturday, that’s exactly what’s happening as Wave of Change launches its latest campaign at this iconic location.
What’s the Wave of Change about?
Wave of Change is a local initiative dedicated to raising awareness about marine litter and its impact on our oceans and coastal communities. Founded by local environmentalist and surfer, Matthew Attard, the organisation has been riding a wave of success since its inception in 2019, engaging thousands of volunteers in beach clean-ups and educational campaigns across Malta and Gozo.
This Saturday’s event, ‘Waves of Change: Xrobb l-Għaġin’, is set to be another significant splash in their mission. The day will kick off with a beach clean-up, followed by an interactive exhibition and talks by local experts. The event is open to all, with a special invitation extended to schools and youth groups.
Why Xrobb l-Għaġin?
Xrobb l-Għaġin, located in the south-west of Malta, is more than just a scenic spot. It’s a microcosm of the challenges our coasts face. The area is a popular spot for both locals and tourists, but it’s also a hotspot for marine litter. By hosting the event here, Wave of Change hopes to highlight the issue and engage the community in finding solutions.
“Xrobb l-Għaġin is a beautiful yet fragile ecosystem,” says Matthew Attard. “It’s the perfect place to raise awareness about the impact of litter on our coasts and oceans.”
What can you expect on the day?
From 9 am, volunteers will gather to clean up the beach and surrounding areas. Gloves, bags, and other necessary equipment will be provided. After the clean-up, the event will move to the nearby Xrobb l-Għaġin Nature Reserve for an interactive exhibition and talks.
The exhibition will showcase the impact of marine litter on Malta’s coastal ecosystems and wildlife, as well as innovative solutions being implemented locally and globally. Talks will be given by local experts, including marine biologists and environmentalists, who will share their insights and answer questions from the audience.
How can you get involved?
Whether you’re a seasoned environmentalist or simply someone who cares about our coasts, there’s a place for you at Wave of Change. To register for the event, visit the Wave of Change website. You can also follow them on Facebook and Instagram for updates on future events and initiatives.
“We believe that everyone has a role to play in protecting our oceans,” says Attard. “Whether it’s by participating in a beach clean-up, reducing your plastic use, or spreading awareness, every action counts.”
