Alex Borg: A PN Government for the People

‘A PN government will put people at the centre of its politics’: Alex Borg

As the sun set over the historic streets of Valletta, Nationalist Party (PN) candidate Alex Borg stood before a crowd at St George’s Square, his words echoing through the ancient city. “The people of Malta deserve a government that puts them first,” he declared, setting the tone for his campaign. But what does this pledge mean for Malta’s voters, and how does Borg intend to make good on his promise?

From the Ground Up: Borg’s Vision

Alex Borg’s vision for Malta is one where the people are not just voters, but active participants in the country’s governance. “We need to shift from a top-down approach to a bottom-up one,” he told Hot Malta in an exclusive interview. “That means involving citizens in decision-making processes, listening to their concerns, and ensuring that our policies reflect their needs.”

Borg points to the PN’s proposed ‘Citizens’ Assembly’ as a key example of this approach. The assembly, comprising a representative sample of Maltese citizens, would be tasked with discussing and making recommendations on crucial national issues. “It’s about giving power back to the people,” Borg explains. “They deserve a say in how their country is run.”

Putting People First: Practical Policies

But how does Borg plan to translate this vision into practical policy? One area he’s particularly focused on is housing. “The cost of living in Malta has skyrocketed, and nowhere is this more evident than in the housing market,” he says. “We need to make housing more affordable, and that means increasing the supply of affordable homes.”

Borg proposes a targeted approach, involving incentives for developers to build affordable housing and streamlining the planning process to speed up construction. He also wants to see more social housing, with the government playing an active role in providing affordable options for those in need.

Another key area is healthcare. “Our healthcare system is under immense pressure,” Borg acknowledges. “We need to invest in our hospitals and medical facilities, and we need to do more to prevent illness and promote health in the first place.” He proposes a focus on preventive medicine, including investment in community health programs and a greater emphasis on mental health services.

From Promise to Reality

Of course, turning these promises into reality will require more than just good intentions. Borg acknowledges the challenges ahead, but remains optimistic. “We have a strong team, with a diverse range of skills and experiences,” he says. “And we’re ready to work hard, to listen to the people, and to deliver on our promises.”

As the campaign continues, Borg and the PN will have the opportunity to flesh out their vision and convince voters that they are the ones to put people at the centre of Maltese politics. For now, though, one thing is clear: Alex Borg’s pledge is more than just campaign rhetoric. It’s a commitment to a different way of governing, one that puts the people of Malta front and centre.

“This is not just about winning an election,” Borg says. “It’s about building a better future for our country. And that starts with putting the people first.”
