Buġibba Square Saga: ADPD Calls for Stronger Councils
Buġibba’s Square Saga: ADPD Calls for Stronger Councils
Stroll down Triq il-Kappillan in Buġibba today, and you’ll find a scene that’s become all too familiar in Malta: a square in limbo, its promised transformation still a distant dream. The Buġibba square works, meant to breathe new life into this seaside town, have been ongoing for what feels like an eternity. And now, the Alternattiva Demokratika (AD) is calling for stronger local councils to ensure such projects don’t become never-ending nightmares.
Buġibba’s Square: A Tale of Promises and Delays
Remember the buzz in 2016 when the government announced plans to revamp Buġibba square? It was supposed to be a breakthrough, transforming the heart of this once-sleepy town into a vibrant, tourist-friendly hub. Four years later, the square remains a construction site, its future uncertain. Locals and tourists alike are left wondering: what’s the hold-up?
According to ADPD, the problem lies not just with the project itself, but with the way our local councils operate. “We need local councils that are strong, independent, and capable of driving such projects to completion,” says ADPD’s Michael Briguglio. “Right now, they’re too weak, too dependent on central government, and too lacking in resources to get things done.”
ADPD’s Plan: Empowering Local Councils
ADPD is calling for a revamp of our local council system. They want to see councils with more autonomy, more funding, and more powers to implement and oversee projects like Buġibba square. “If councils had more control and more resources, they could ensure projects like this don’t drag on for years,” Briguglio says.
But it’s not just about speeding up projects, ADPD argues. Stronger councils could also ensure that such projects are tailored to local needs and wants. “Too often, projects are imposed from above, without enough input from the people who’ll be affected,” Briguglio says. “If councils were stronger, they could ensure that local voices are heard.”
Buġibba’s Future: A Test Case for Change
Buġibba square could be the test case for this proposed change. If ADPD’s vision becomes reality, perhaps future projects in Buġibba – and across Malta – will be different. Perhaps they’ll be driven by local needs, not central whims. Perhaps they’ll be completed on time, not left half-finished for years.
But for now, Buġibba’s square remains a symbol of our current system’s shortcomings. It’s a reminder that, when it comes to local projects, we need more than just promises. We need action. And we need councils that can deliver.
As Briguglio puts it, “Buġibba’s square isn’t just a square. It’s a symbol of what’s wrong with our local councils, and what needs to change.”
