Caruana’s Cost Secret Keeps Malta Guessing

Caruana’s Silence on Labour’s Costs Raises Eyebrows in Castille Square

In the heart of Valletta, under the watchful gaze of the Grandmaster’s Palace, a small crowd gathers around a makeshift podium. It’s a typical afternoon in Castille Square, but today, the chatter is about more than just the weather. Labour Party leader Clyde Caruana has just announced his party’s manifesto for the upcoming elections, but there’s one question on everyone’s lips: how much will it all cost?

Caruana, however, is tight-lipped. He’s not revealing the overall cost of his party’s pledges, leaving many in the crowd, and the wider public, wondering how Labour plans to fund its ambitious promises.

Labour’s Big Promises

Caruana’s manifesto is a laundry list of ambitious plans. There’s the promise to build 5,000 new affordable homes by 2026, a commitment to increase the minimum wage to €1,000, and a pledge to invest heavily in green energy. But how does Labour plan to pay for it all?

Caruana was vague when pressed on the issue. “We have a strong plan,” he told reporters. “We’ve crunched the numbers, but now is not the time to reveal all. We’ll do that in due course.”

Opposition Reacts: ‘Tellers Not Tell-Alls’

Not everyone is happy with Caruana’s secrecy. Nationalist Party leader Adrian Delia was quick to criticize Labour’s lack of transparency. “Tellers should be tell-alls, not tell-nothings,” he quipped. “The people deserve to know how much these promises will cost them.”

Delia isn’t the only one raising concerns. Financial experts, like Dr. Joseph Farrugia, a lecturer at the University of Malta, warn that without knowing the full cost, it’s hard to judge the manifesto’s feasibility. “We need to know the numbers to assess the economic impact,” he says.

Labour’s Defense: ‘Trust the Experts’

Labour, however, stands by its decision. “We have a team of experts working on this,” Caruana insists. “We trust them, and we ask the public to trust us. We’ll reveal all in good time.”

But with the election just months away, the question remains: will Labour reveal the cost of its manifesto before voters go to the polls? . But one thing’s for sure, the people of Malta are watching, and they’re waiting for answers.

In the meantime, the debate continues in Castille Square and beyond. The future of Malta, it seems, is up for grabs, and the cost of getting there is still very much up for debate.
