Caruana’s Silence on Labour’s Costs Raises Eyebrows
In the heart of Malta’s political scene, Clyde Caruana, Labour Party’s treasurer, has found himself in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons. As the party’s manifesto for the upcoming elections rolls out, promising a plethora of pledges, Caruana has been notably tight-lipped about one crucial detail: the overall cost of these promises.
Promises Galore, But at What Cost?
From affordable housing in Msida to free childcare in Birkirkara, Labour’s manifesto is a laundry list of voter-friendly pledges. Yet, as the party paints a rosy picture of a future Malta, the question on everyone’s mind is: how much will all this cost? Caruana, the man responsible for crunching the numbers, has been surprisingly mum on the subject.
In a recent press conference at the Labour Party headquarters in Pietà, Caruana deftly dodged questions about the total cost of the manifesto, instead focusing on individual pledges and their supposed benefits. When pressed further, he simply smiled and replied, “All will be revealed in due time.”
Opposition Cries Foul
The Opposition has wasted no time in pouncing on Caruana’s evasiveness. Nationalist Party leader Bernard Grech has been vocal in his criticism, accusing Labour of hiding behind vague promises and a lack of transparency. “How can we trust these pledges when we don’t even know the full cost?” Grech asked during a recent rally in Rabat.
Grech isn’t the only one raising concerns. Economists and financial analysts have also been quick to point out the potential pitfalls of such a lack of clarity. “It’s like promising to build a dream house without revealing the blueprint or the budget,” said Dr. Joseph Farrugia, an economist at the University of Malta. “How can we ensure the house won’t collapse under its own weight?”
Labour Stands Firm
Despite the criticism, Labour remains unruffled. Caruana, in a rare moment of openness, told Hot Malta, “We’re not hiding anything. We’re simply taking the time to ensure our figures are accurate. We want to avoid any nasty surprises down the line.” He also hinted that a detailed cost breakdown would be revealed closer to the election date.
When asked if the party was worried about the potential backlash from voters, Caruana was dismissive. “Voters understand that change costs money. They’re not foolish. They just want to know what they’re voting for.”
if Caruana’s strategy pays off. For now, the political scene in Malta remains as vibrant and unpredictable as ever, with the cost of Labour’s promises hanging in the air like a tantalizing mystery.
