EasyJet’s Malta Operations Hit by Middle East War
EasyJet’s Malta Operations Take a Hit as First-Half Loss Deepens
MALTA – The hum of EasyJet’s aircraft, once a constant at Malta International Airport, has been noticeably quieter these past months. The reason? The airline’s operations in the Mediterranean have taken a significant knock due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
War in the Middle East Grounds Flights
EasyJet, a major player in Malta’s tourism industry, has reported a deeper first-half loss than initially expected. The reason behind this is the war in the Middle East, which has led to the grounding of flights to and from the region. This includes popular routes from Malta to Tel Aviv, which has seen a significant drop in passenger numbers.
“We’ve seen a significant decrease in bookings to Israel,” confirms a local EasyJet representative. “The conflict has understandably made many passengers reconsider their travel plans.”
Malta’s Tourism Industry Feels the Heat
Malta’s tourism industry, which contributes around 25% to the country’s GDP, is feeling the heat. EasyJet’s reduced operations are just one factor contributing to a slowdown in tourist arrivals from key markets like the UK and Germany.
“EasyJet’s reduced flights mean fewer tourists coming into Malta,” says Joseph Muscat, President of the Malta Hotels and Restaurants Association. “This is a concern, especially as we head into the peak summer season.”
: A Cautious Optimism
Despite the challenges, there’s a cautious optimism among local businesses. EasyJet has assured that it remains committed to its Malta operations, with plans to increase flights during the summer months. the Maltese government is actively working to diversify tourism markets, looking towards new opportunities in Europe and beyond.
As one local tour operator puts it, “We’re not out of the woods yet, but we’re working hard to ensure that Malta remains a top destination. After all, our island’s beauty and hospitality are unmatched.”
