Gżira Man Hospitalised After 3-Storey Fall

Gżira Balcony Plunge: Man Hospitalised, Safety Concerns Raised

Emergency services rushed to a Gżira apartment block on Tuesday evening after a man plummeted three storeys from a balcony, landing on a parked car below. The incident, which occurred around 8 pm at Triq l-Imqabba, has left the local community shaken and raised questions about balcony safety in Malta’s densely populated urban areas.

Man Fighting for Life

The victim, a 35-year-old man, was found unconscious and severely injured on the roof of a parked car. Witnesses reported hearing a loud thud and seeing the man lying motionless on the vehicle. Paramedics from the Malta Civil Protection Department and the Maltese Red Cross arrived at the scene within minutes, stabilising the man before transporting him to Mater Dei Hospital. As of now, his condition is critical but stable.

Neighbours and passersby were left stunned by the incident. “I heard a loud bang and came out to see what happened,” said Maria, a resident of the same street. “It’s terrifying to think that something like this can happen right outside your doorstep.”

Balcony Safety Under Scrutiny

The incident has sparked concerns about balcony safety, particularly in older apartment blocks like the one in Gżira. Many of these buildings have balconies with low railings or none at all, posing a significant risk, especially for children and elderly residents.

Dr. Joseph Mizzi, a structural engineer, told Hot Malta, “Balconies should have railings that are at least 1.1 meters high to prevent falls. Unfortunately, many older buildings in Malta do not meet this standard.” He urged the public to be cautious and to report any safety concerns to their local council.

Investigation Underway

The exact circumstances surrounding the fall are still under investigation. Police are treating the incident as an accident and have not ruled out the possibility of foul play. They are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the fall or has information that could assist in their investigation to come forward.

In the meantime, the local community is left to grapple with the aftermath of the incident. A makeshift shrine of flowers and candles has been set up outside the apartment block, with residents and passersby stopping to pay their respects and offer prayers for the man’s recovery.

Hot Malta will continue to follow this story as more information becomes available.
