Feeling the Pinch: Inflation Hits 2.5% in April

As you queued at the bakery in Msida this morning, you might have felt it – the subtle squeeze on your wallet. The National Statistics Office (NSO) has just confirmed what many Maltese have been experiencing firsthand: inflation has risen to 2.5% in April.

What’s Driving the Price Hike?

The NSO’s report points to several factors behind this increase. Topping the list is food and non-alcoholic beverages, which saw a 3.6% rise. Your morning cappuccino and evening pizza are now costing you more. Energy prices also soared, up by 28.4%, reflecting global trends and the war in Ukraine.

But it’s not just the essentials feeling the heat. Transport costs jumped by 5.1%, with fuel prices reaching record highs. And if you’re planning a summer getaway, holidays are set to be pricier too, with package tours and flights up by 13.7% and 12.9% respectively.

How Does This Affect You?

For many Maltese, this inflation hike is a reality check. Salaries haven’t kept pace with prices, leaving families to tighten their belts. “I’ve had to cut back on eating out and even reduced my shopping at the butcher,” says Maria, a mother of two from Birkirkara.

But it’s not all doom and gloom. The Central Bank of Malta has reassured the public that inflation is expected to ease later this year. “We’re monitoring the situation closely,” says Governor Edmond Barton. “We anticipate inflation to peak in the coming months and then gradually decline.”

What Can We Do?

While we wait for prices to stabilise, there are steps we can take. Shopping smart – buying in bulk, choosing store-brand products, and opting for local produce – can help stretch your euro. And with summer around the corner, consider staycations or day trips to explore our beautiful islands.

As Malta navigates these economic waters, it’s crucial to stay informed and adapt. After all, we’re not just watching the numbers rise – we’re living them.
