Labour’s Manifesto: Costs Still a Mystery

Caruana’s Silence on Costs: A Budget Black Hole or Strategic Play?

Standing before a sea of Labour supporters at the party’s headquarters in Pietà, Clyde Caruana, the party’s treasurer, unveiled their manifesto. The crowd cheered as pledge after pledge rolled out, from free childcare to affordable housing. But as the applause died down, one question lingered: how much will all this cost?

Caruana, however, was tight-lipped. When pressed by journalists, he deftly side-stepped, promising a detailed cost breakdown ‘in due course’. But with just weeks until the election, voters are left wondering: is Labour hiding a budget black hole, or is this a strategic move to keep their cards close to their chest?

Labour’s Big Ticket Items

Labour’s manifesto is a wishlist of big-ticket items. There’s the promise of free childcare for all, a pledge to build 10,000 affordable homes, and a commitment to slash university fees by half. Then there’s the small matter of a €15 minimum wage. It’s a generous menu, but who’s picking up the tab?

Caruana insists Labour’s pledges are fully costed, but he’s not sharing the figures yet. ‘We want to have a conversation with the Maltese people about our vision for the country,’ he told Hot Malta. ‘We’ll share the details when the time is right.’

Opposition’s Concerns and Experts Weigh In

The Opposition is crying foul. ‘Labour is trying to buy votes with promises they can’t keep,’ said Nationalist Party spokesman Ryan Callus. ‘They’re not telling the truth about the cost because they know the figures don’t add up.’

Economists are also raising eyebrows. ‘It’s not responsible to make these kinds of promises without a clear plan for how you’re going to pay for them,’ said Dr. Joseph Farrugia, an economist at the University of Malta. ‘We need to see the numbers.’

But Labour isn’t budging. ‘We’re not going to play into the Opposition’s game,’ said Caruana. ‘We’re focused on our vision for a fairer, more prosperous Malta.’

So, is Labour hiding a budget black hole, or is this a strategic move to keep their rivals guessing? . But one thing’s for sure: the Maltese people deserve to know the full cost of Labour’s promises before they cast their votes.
