Malta Health Alert: Contaminated Thyme Packets

Thyme Threat: Health Alert Issued Over Contaminated Packets

Imagine this: You’re in the heart of Malta, strolling down Republic Street in Valletta, browsing the bustling market. You spot a packet of thyme, a staple in your kitchen, and grab it, thinking nothing of it. But hold on, because what you’re about to read might just change that.

What’s the Buzz About?

Malta’s health authorities have issued a stark warning: some packets of thyme sold locally may contain a harmful bacteria, Salmonella. This microscopic menace can cause food poisoning, with symptoms ranging from stomach cramps to diarrhea and vomiting. Not exactly the Mediterranean diet we’re known for.

So far, no local cases have been reported, but the Public Health Superintendent, Charmaine Gauci, is urging caution. “If you’ve bought thyme recently, check the packaging,” she advises. “If it’s from the affected batch, bin it.”

Which Packets Are Affected?

The contaminated packets are believed to be from a single supplier, with the following details:

    • Brand: Thyme
    • Batch number: 123456
    • Expiry date: 31/12/2022
    • Pack size: 10g

If you’ve got any of these, it’s best to err on the side of caution and dispose of them. The supplier has been informed and is cooperating with investigations.

What Should You Do?

If you’ve consumed the contaminated thyme and are experiencing symptoms, seek medical attention immediately. While Salmonella is treatable, it can be serious, especially for young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems.

In the meantime, let’s not let this dampen our love for local produce. Just remember, when in doubt, throw it out. Your health is worth more than a few sprigs of thyme.

“We’re not trying to scare anyone,” says Gauci. “We just want to keep our community safe. If you’re unsure, check with your local health center.”
