Malta: Momentum Proposes Three Innovative Solutions to Combat Domestic Violence
Three Proposals to Strengthen Malta’s Fight Against Domestic Violence
In the heart of Valletta, at the doorstep of the historic Auberge d’Italie, a woman clutches her bag, eyes darting, as she approaches the police station. She’s not alone. Every day, women like her, victims of domestic violence, seek help in Malta’s capital. Now, local NGO Momentum is proposing three innovative solutions to better support them.
Understanding the Challenge
Malta’s domestic violence scene is complex. According to the National Commission of the Family, 20% of Maltese women have experienced physical or sexual violence from an intimate partner. The pandemic has exacerbated the issue, with reports of domestic violence increasing by 25% in 2020. Yet, many victims face barriers to seeking help, from fear of stigma to practical obstacles like lack of childcare.
Momentum’s Proposals
1. Safe Spaces in Public Places
Momentum proposes creating safe spaces in public places, like libraries or community centers, where victims can access support services discreetly. “We want to make help more accessible,” says Momentum’s coordinator, Maria Grech. “Imagine a woman sitting in a library, seemingly reading a book, but actually communicating with a support worker through a discreet app.”
2. Integrated Support Services
Momentum also advocates for integrated support services, bringing together police, social workers, and legal professionals under one roof. “Currently, victims have to navigate a maze of services,” Grech explains. “We want to simplify this process, making it easier for victims to access the help they need.”
3. Prevention Through Education
Momentum’s third proposal focuses on prevention. They suggest integrating domestic violence education into school curriculums, teaching children about healthy relationships and respect. “We need to tackle the root causes of domestic violence,” Grech says. “Education is a powerful tool for prevention.”
Momentum’s proposals are part of a broader national conversation about domestic violence. The government is currently drafting a new domestic violence bill, and Momentum’s proposals could shape this legislation. “We’re optimistic,” Grech says. “We’ve seen real commitment from the government to tackle this issue.”
As for the woman outside the Valletta police station, she’s not alone in her struggle. But with initiatives like Momentum’s, Malta is taking steps to ensure she’s not alone in her fight for justice and safety.
