Malta’s Judo Scene: Adding Up to Success
The Martial Math: How Judo is Adding Up in Malta
Ever wondered what it takes to flip a grown man onto his back with just a simple grip and a swift movement? Welcome to the world of Judo, where physics meets martial arts, and Malta is proving to be a hotspot for this unique sport.
From Tokyo to Triq San Gorg
Tucked away in a quiet street off Triq San Gorg in Msida, you’ll find the Malta Judo Federation. Here, under the watchful eye of coaches like Charles Camenzuli, locals and expats alike are honing their skills in this ancient Japanese martial art. But how did Judo make its way from the dojos of Tokyo to the heart of Malta?
Charles, a 5th Dan black belt and the federation’s technical director, explains, “Judo was introduced to Malta in the 1960s by a group of British servicemen stationed here. It caught on quickly, and by the 1970s, we had our first national champions.” Today, the federation boasts over 100 active members, with clubs spread across the island.
More Than Just a Sport
Judo is more than just a sport; it’s a way of life. At its core, it’s about using an opponent’s momentum against them, a principle known as ‘seiryoku zen’yo’. It’s about strategy, balance, and respect. It’s about learning to fall, both literally and metaphorically.
Take, for instance, the story of 17-year-old Matthew Azzopardi. Diagnosed with autism, Matthew found solace and discipline in Judo. “It’s helped him focus, gain confidence, and make friends,” says his mother. “It’s not just about the physical aspect; it’s about the mental and emotional growth too.”
Making Waves on the International Stage
Malta’s Judo scene might be small, but it’s punching above its weight on the international stage. At the 2018 Mediterranean Judo Championships, Maltese judokas bagged two gold, two silver, and three bronze medals. And at the 2019 European Games, Elite Athlete Program scholar and local hero Francesco Garcea made it to the quarter-finals.
But it’s not just about the medals. It’s about the community. It’s about the sense of belonging. It’s about the shared passion for a sport that’s as much about respect as it is about strength.
As Charles puts it, “Judo is about more than just winning. It’s about learning, growing, and becoming the best version of yourself. And that’s something we can all strive for, on and off the mat.”
So, if you’re looking for a new challenge, a new community, or just a new way to keep fit, why not give Judo a try? You might just find that the martial math adds up to something truly special.
