Malta’s Martial Arts: Punching Above Their Weight
The Martial Math: How Maltese Fighters are Punching Above Their Weight
In the heart of Rabat, Malta, tucked away in a quiet street, you’ll find a humble gym. It’s not your typical fitness centre, though. This is where Malta’s martial arts scene is quietly making waves, one punch at a time. Welcome to Team Malta MMA, where local fighters are proving that size doesn’t dictate power.
From Garage to Glory
Started in 2011 by coach and former fighter, Mario Micallef, Team Malta MMA began in a garage. Today, it’s a thriving community of fighters who’ve made their mark on the international stage. They’ve fought in promotions like Bellator and Cage Warriors, and even made it to the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).
Mario’s passion for martial arts began in the 90s when he started training in Taekwondo. He saw the potential in Malta’s fighters and decided to create a space where they could grow. “We started with just a few guys training in a garage,” he recalls. “Now, we’ve got over 50 fighters, and we’re still growing.”
Malta’s Martial Arts Boom
Malta’s martial arts scene has exploded in recent years. Gyms are popping up across the islands, and local fighters are making a name for themselves. But what sets Team Malta MMA apart? Mario believes it’s their community spirit. “We’re like a family,” he says. “Everyone supports each other, from the beginners to the pros.”
This support system has helped fighters like Dean Amasinger and Cyril Asker reach the UFC. Dean, a lightweight fighter, made his UFC debut in 2016. Cyril, a heavyweight, followed suit in 2017. Both fighters credit Team Malta MMA with their success.
Training the Next Generation
Team Malta MMA isn’t just about churning out professional fighters. It’s about creating a community where anyone can learn martial arts, regardless of their experience or fitness level. They offer classes in MMA, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai, and more.
“We’ve had people come in who’ve never done any kind of sport before,” Mario says. “They start with us, and it changes their lives. They get fit, they gain confidence, and they make friends. That’s what it’s all about.”
