Malta’s Mothers of Invention: Women Pioneering Change
In the heart of Valletta, at the bustling Republic Street, a group of women gather weekly. They’re not just there for the shopping or the coffee. They’re there to change the world, one idea at a time. Welcome to ‘Mothers of Invention’, Malta’s first all-women climate action collective.
The Spark
Meet Dr. Marthese Portelli, a local environmental scientist, and Claire Borg, a sustainability consultant. They’re the spark that ignited this movement. “We saw a gap,” says Marthese, “women were underrepresented in climate action, and we wanted to change that.”
The Collective
The collective is a melting pot of Malta’s brightest minds. There’s Maria Camilleri, a software engineer with a passion for renewable energy. Nadia Vella, a marine biologist fighting for our seas. Rosemarie Said Zahloute, an architect designing sustainable spaces. Each brings a unique perspective, weaving a rich mix ideas.
They meet, they brainstorm, they plan. Over coffee, they’ve drafted policies, designed projects, and even started a podcast. “It’s about empowering women,” says Claire, “giving us a voice, a platform to drive change.”
The Impact
Their work is already making waves. They’ve advised government on policy, collaborated with NGOs, and even inspired a local school to start a green club. Their podcast, ‘Women on the Green Front’, is a hit, featuring inspiring women from around the globe.
But they’re not stopping there. They’re planning big. A climate festival, a women-in-climate mentorship program, and even a climate action startup incubator. “We’re not just talking,” says Marthese, “we’re doing.”
And they’re not alone. Similar collectives are springing up across Malta. “It’s a movement,” says Rosemarie, “and it’s growing.”
Get Involved
Whether you’re a woman with an idea, or a man who wants to support, ‘Mothers of Invention’ welcome all. They meet every Tuesday at Café Society in Valletta. Join them. Be part of the change.
