Malta’s Political Chatbot Spins a Tale of Oil Rigs and Harbour Giants

Imagine this: you’re casually browsing the Malta Labour Party’s (MLP) official chatbot, ‘LabourBot’, when suddenly, it starts painting a picture of Malta’s future that’s more ‘Mad Max’ than Mediterranean. Oil rigs dotting our pristine coastline, harbours expanded to the size of small cities. You blink, rub your eyes, and wonder, ‘What just happened?’

This isn’t a scene from a dystopian film, but a recent ‘hallucination’ by LabourBot, the MLP’s chatbot, which has been sparking controversy and raising eyebrows across Malta. The chatbot, designed to engage voters and share party policies, seems to have taken a creative liberty too far, leaving many scratching their heads and questioning the veracity of its information.

From Policy to Pixels: The Chatbot’s Vision

LabourBot’s vivid, if not worrying, imagery was triggered by a simple question about the Nationalist Party’s (PN) proposals for Malta’s energy sector. The chatbot responded with a detailed description of oil rigs scattered along our shores, and harbours expanded to accommodate ‘giant ships’. It even mentioned the ‘dramatic transformation’ of Marsaxlokk harbour, a popular fishing village and tourist spot in the south of Malta.

But here’s the catch – the PN has not proposed any such plans. So, where did LabourBot get its vivid, if not flawed, imagination from?

Fact-Checking the Fiction

Hot Malta reached out to both the MLP and the PN for clarification. The MLP, while acknowledging the chatbot’s ‘creative’ response, maintained that it was merely a ‘hypothetical scenario’ and not a party proposal. The PN, on the other hand, was quick to dismiss the chatbot’s claims as ‘false and misleading’, stating that they have no plans to turn Malta into an ‘oil rig haven’.

Dr. Ian Grixti, a political scientist at the University of Malta, weighed in on the matter, “Chatbots are only as good as the data they’re fed. If they’re not properly programmed or fact-checked, they can indeed create more confusion than clarity.”

This isn’t the first time LabourBot has found itself in hot water. In the past, it’s been known to make statements that were either misleading or outright false, leading some to question its reliability as a source of information.

: The Future of Political Chatbots

As Malta’s political scene becomes increasingly digital, so too do the tools used to engage voters. But with great power comes great responsibility, and it’s clear that more needs to be done to ensure the accuracy and reliability of political chatbots.

Dr. Grixti suggests, “Perhaps it’s time to consider regulations for political chatbots, similar to those for political advertising. After all, they’re becoming an increasingly important part of our political discourse.”

As for LabourBot, its future remains uncertain. But one thing’s for sure – it’s given Malta a lot to talk about, and perhaps a lot to think about as well.

Hot Malta reached out to the MLP and PN for comment. The MLP responded, while the PN did not.
