Maltese Activist’s Account: Israeli Raid on Gaza Flotilla

Israeli Intervention: Maltese Activist’s Account from the Flotilla

Imagine being on a boat in international waters, your destination a mere 100 nautical miles away, when suddenly, you’re surrounded by Israeli commandos, their faces obscured, weapons drawn. This was the reality for Maltese activist, Alex Attard, and other activists on the Mavi Marmara in 2010. The incident sparked international outcry and remains a contentious issue today.

Background: The Gaza Freedom Flotilla

The Mavi Marmara was part of the Gaza Freedom Flotilla, a convoy aiming to break the Israeli-Egyptian blockade of the Gaza Strip. The flotilla carried humanitarian aid and sought to raise awareness about the blockade’s impact on Gaza’s civilian population. Among the activists were individuals from various countries, including Malta.

May 31, 2010: The Raid

In the early hours of May 31, 2010, Israeli forces launched a surprise attack on the flotilla. Alex, then a 28-year-old activist from Birkirkara, recounted the scene: “We were woken up by the sound of helicopters. Suddenly, commandos rappelled down from the sky, guns pointed at us. It was terrifying.”

The Israeli military maintained they acted in self-defense after activists onboard resisted their attempt to take control of the ship. However, the United Nations Human Rights Council later found that the Israeli military used excessive force and violated international law.

Aftermath and International Response

The raid left nine activists dead and many others injured. The incident drew international condemnation, with countries worldwide, including Malta, expressing concern over Israel’s use of force. The Maltese government, while acknowledging the right to self-defense, urged restraint and called for an investigation.

In the years following, efforts to lift the Gaza blockade have continued, with various international organizations and activists, including Maltese groups like Gaza Solidarity Malta, advocating for Gaza’s population.

Today, the debate around the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the Gaza blockade remains complex and divisive. However, the incident on the Mavi Marmara serves as a stark reminder of the human cost of political tensions and the importance of peaceful protest.

As Alex reflects, “The experience changed me. It made me more determined to stand up for what I believe in, even in the face of adversity.”
