Maltese Mountaineer Conquers Everest

Malta’s Mountainous Moment: Local Hero Summits Everest

Imagine standing at 8,848.86 metres, the highest point on Earth, with the world literally at your feet. This is not a fantasy, but a reality for Maltese mountaineer, Alex Borg, who recently became the first Maltese national to reach the summit of Mount Everest.

Borg, a 37-year-old from Msida, has been scaling peaks since he was a teenager. But this time, it was different. This time, he was attempting the ultimate challenge, the roof of the world. And he succeeded, on May 22, after a grueling 60-day expedition.

From Mediterranean Islands to the Roof of the World

Borg’s journey to Everest began not in the Himalayas, but right here in Malta. His love for the outdoors and adventure was nurtured in our very own Dingli Cliffs and Comino. From these humble beginnings, he progressed to bigger challenges, like climbing Aconcagua, the highest peak in the Americas.

But Everest was always the dream. “It’s the biggest mountain in the world,” Borg told Hot Malta in an exclusive interview. “It’s a challenge that pushes you to your limits, both physically and mentally.”

An Uphill Struggle

Everest is not just a mountain; it’s a test of endurance, resilience, and teamwork. Borg and his team faced extreme weather conditions, including temperatures dropping as low as -30°C. They navigated treacherous icefalls and climbed through the deadly Khumbu Icefall.

But it was the final push to the summit that was the most challenging. “The last few hundred metres are the toughest,” Borg recalls. “The air is thin, the slope is steep, and you’re exhausted. But you keep going because you’ve come so far.”

At 6:30 AM local time on May 22, Borg reached the summit. He planted the Maltese flag, looked out at the world below, and took a moment to appreciate the journey that had brought him there.

Homecoming and Inspiration

Borg returned to a hero’s welcome in Malta. Crowds gathered at Luqa Airport to greet him, and he was received by the Prime Minister and other dignitaries. But for Borg, the most meaningful part of his homecoming was inspiring the next generation.

“I want to show kids that no matter where you come from, you can achieve great things,” he says. “I want them to look at my journey and think, ‘If he can do it, I can too.'”

Borg is already planning his next adventure. But for now, he’s content to be back home, sharing his story and inspiring others. As he puts it, “The mountain may be high, but the view is worth it.”
