Malta’s Mountain Conqueror: Meet the First Maltese to Summit Everest

Imagine standing atop the world, quite literally. That’s exactly where Maltese mountaineer, Alex Borg, found himself on May 16th, becoming the first Maltese national to reach the summit of Mount Everest. At 8,848.86 metres, it’s not just the highest peak in the world, but a symbol of human endurance and achievement.

From the Mediterranean to the Himalayas

Alex’s journey began not in the snow-capped peaks of Nepal, but in the sunny streets of Malta. A seasoned climber, he’s scaled some of the island’s highest points, like the Ta’ Dmejrek tower in Dingli, and even ventured into the nearby Sicilian mountains. But Everest was always the ultimate goal. “It’s the highest point on Earth,” he says, “every mountaineer dreams of standing on top.”

Preparation was rigorous. Alex spent months training in the Maltese countryside, carrying heavy packs up and down the island’s hills. He also spent time in the Alps, acclimatising to high altitudes. His gear was carefully chosen, a mix of international brands and local favourites like the sturdy Maltese boots he wore during his descent.

Summit Fever

Alex’s Everest expedition was no solo mission. He was part of a larger international team, each with their own stories and motivations. But when they reached the summit together, it was a moment of pure elation. “The view was incredible,” Alex recalls, “but it was the sense of achievement that was truly overwhelming.”

Reaching the summit is just half the battle. The descent is often more challenging, with climbers exhausted and navigating treacherous ice. Alex and his team made it back to Base Camp safely, their mission complete. Back in Malta, the news of his achievement spread like wildfire, with friends and family celebrating his incredible feat.

Alex’s Everest climb isn’t just a personal achievement, it’s a testament to Maltese grit and determination. It shows that no matter where we come from, we can reach for the highest peaks. As Alex puts it, “If you set your mind to something, anything is possible.”
