Man in Critical Condition After Gżira Balcony Fall
Gżira Balcony Fall: Man in Critical Condition
Emergency services rushed to a Gżira apartment block on Sunday evening after reports of a man falling from a third-floor balcony. The incident, which occurred around 8 pm, left the victim with critical injuries, according to sources close to the investigation.
Residents Recall the Incident
Residents of the block, located on Triq San Ġorġ, described hearing a loud thud followed by screams. “It all happened so fast,” said one resident, who wished to remain anonymous. “I looked out my window and saw him lying on the ground. It’s something I’ll never forget.”
The man, believed to be in his late 30s, was found unconscious and bleeding on the pavement. Paramedics from the Malta Civil Protection Department arrived within minutes and stabilised him before transporting him to Mater Dei Hospital.
Investigators Scrutinise the Scene
Police and forensic teams cordoned off the area and began investigating the cause of the fall. Initial reports suggest it may have been an accident, but all possibilities are being explored. “We’re treating this as a serious incident and are leaving no stone unturned,” said a police spokesperson.
The balcony, according to neighbours, was not particularly wide, and there was no safety barrier. “I’ve always thought something like this could happen,” said another resident. “I hope this serves as a wake-up call for others to ensure their balconies are safe.”
Balcony Safety in Malta
Balcony falls are not uncommon in Malta, with several incidents reported each year. In 2020, the Malta Developers Association called for mandatory safety barriers on balconies, a proposal that is still under consideration.
Dr. Joseph Cuschieri, a Maltese orthopaedic surgeon, warns that balcony falls can result in severe injuries. “We’ve seen cases of spinal injuries, head trauma, and broken bones. It’s crucial for people to be careful, especially when consuming alcohol,” he said.
In the meantime, the man’s family has been informed, and he remains in the intensive care unit. Doctors describe his condition as critical but stable.
