Nurses’ Warning: Mount Carmel’s Garden Refurb Could Cost Lives

Imagine, if you will, the quiet, green oasis that is Mount Carmel Hospital’s garden. A place where patients, nurses, and doctors alike find solace and respite from the humdrum of hospital life. Now, picture it barricaded, inaccessible, a construction site. This is the reality that nurses at Malta’s largest hospital are warning could lead to tragic consequences.

Patients’ Lifeline: The Garden

Mount Carmel’s garden is more than just a pretty courtyard. It’s a lifeline for patients, a space where they can breathe fresh air, feel the sun on their faces, and find a moment’s peace amidst the beeps and bustle of the wards. But with the garden undergoing refurbishment, this lifeline is under threat.

“Patients are being denied access to the garden, a space that’s crucial for their mental and physical well-being,” says a concerned nurse, speaking on condition of anonymity. “We’re seeing increased agitation, restlessness, and even panic attacks among patients who are used to spending time outdoors.”

Nurses’ Fears: Safety and Access

Nurses’ fears aren’t just about patients’ well-being. They’re also worried about safety. The garden, once a peaceful haven, is now a construction site, with heavy machinery and tools lying around. Patients, many of whom are elderly or infirm, could easily wander into harm’s way.

“We’ve had a few close calls already,” another nurse reveals. “Patients have tried to enter the garden, not understanding why it’s closed. It’s only a matter of time before someone gets hurt.”

The nurses aren’t against the refurbishment. In fact, they welcome the idea of a safer, more accessible garden. But they’re concerned about the lack of alternative spaces for patients and the rushed nature of the project.

The Hospital’s Response

When contacted, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Health said, “We understand the concerns of the nursing staff. The garden refurbishment is a necessary project to improve patient experience. Alternative spaces have been provided, and safety measures are in place. We’re working closely with the nursing staff to ensure patients’ needs are met.”

However, nurses on the ground tell a different story. “There are no alternative spaces,” one nurse laments. “The few outdoor areas we have are too small and too exposed. Patients need a quiet, sheltered space to relax and recover.”

: A Call for Dialogue

The refurbishment is set to continue, with no clear end date in sight. Nurses are calling for open dialogue with hospital management and the Ministry of Health. They want to ensure that patients’ needs are at the heart of the project, not an afterthought.

“We’re not against progress,” says the first nurse. “But we can’t afford to compromise patient safety and well-being in the process. We need to work together to find a solution that works for everyone.”
