PA Delays Decision on Illegal Manoel Island Padel Courts

Padel Puzzle: PA’s Manoel Island Dilemma

Picture this: the sun sets over the Grand Harbour, painting the sky with hues of orange and pink. The gentle lapping of waves against the shore is interrupted by the rhythmic thwack of a padel ball. Welcome to Manoel Island, where an unlikely sporting scene has sparked a bureaucratic conundrum.

The Public Authority (PA) has postponed its decision on the fate of two illegal padel courts nestled within the historic island’s gardens. The courts, a stone’s throw from the iconic Fort Manoel, have become a local hotspot, drawing in enthusiasts from across Malta and beyond.

Courts in the Crosshairs

The PA, responsible for managing public open spaces, discovered the courts earlier this year. Despite being unauthorized, they’ve been allowed to operate, much to the delight of padel fans. But the PA’s patience has run out, and a decision on their future is imminent.

“We understand the popularity of padel and the demand for more courts,” a PA spokesperson told Hot Malta. “However, these courts were built without proper planning permission, and we must consider the impact on the island’s heritage and environment.”

Local Love for Padel

Manoel Island residents and padel enthusiasts have been vocal about their support for the courts. “It’s a great way to keep fit and socialize,” said Malta Padel Association President, Mario Bonnici. “The courts have breathed new life into the island.”

Bonnici argues that the PA should regularize the courts, not shut them down. “We’ve seen similar situations in other countries where padel courts have been integrated into public spaces successfully,” he added.

Meanwhile, some residents have raised concerns about noise and parking issues. “While we appreciate the sport, we must consider the impact on our peaceful neighborhood,” said one resident, who wished to remain anonymous.

What’s Next?

The PA is expected to make a decision soon, with options ranging from regularizing the courts to ordering their removal. The Malta Padel Association has urged the PA to consider the sport’s growing popularity and the benefits it brings to the community.

“We’re hopeful that a solution can be found that respects the island’s heritage while accommodating this vibrant sport,” Bonnici said.

Hot Malta will continue to follow this story as it unfolds. In the meantime, padel enthusiasts can enjoy the courts while they await the PA’s decision, under the watchful eye of Fort Manoel.
