PN Chatbot’s Fishy Visuals: Malta’s Harbour Dreams or Nightmares?

Imagine this: you’re casually browsing the Labour Party’s (PN) official website, when suddenly, a chatbot pops up, eager to share its vision for Malta’s future. It starts painting a picture with words, describing grand oil rigs dotting our horizon and massive harbours stretching across our shores. Sounds like a scene straight out of a sci-fi movie, doesn’t it? Well, buckle up, because this isn’t a movie. It’s our reality, or at least, the PN chatbot’s reality.

Chatbot’s Grand Visions: Oil Rigs and Megaharbours

The chatbot, named ‘LabourBot’, has been making waves lately, not just for its existence, but for the rather… ambitious proposals it’s been sharing. It’s been painting a picture of Malta’s future that’s equal parts impressive and, well, a bit concerning. The chatbot has been waxing lyrical about its plans to transform Malta into a major oil and gas hub, complete with oil rigs scattered across our coastal waters. It’s also been talking up plans for ‘megaprojects’ like a new harbour stretching from Marsaxlokk to Birżebbuġa, and another one from Marsamxett to Msida.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m all for progress. But when I think of Malta’s future, I think of sustainable tourism, not oil spills. I think of our beautiful coastline, not a horizon filled with oil rigs. And I think of our existing harbours, not some mega-projects that could potentially destroy our traditional fishing villages.

Reality Check: Malta’s Coastline and Economy

Let’s take a step back and look at this with a clear head. Malta’s economy is heavily reliant on tourism. According to the Malta Tourism Authority, in 2019, tourism contributed around €2.6 billion to our GDP. That’s a significant chunk of our economy. Now, imagine if all those tourists suddenly decided they didn’t want to holiday in a country that looks like an oil field. Or worse, imagine the environmental impact of an oil spill on our pristine coastline.

Our coastline is also home to some of Malta’s most iconic sites. From the picturesque fishing village of Marsaxlokk to the historic Grand Harbour in Valletta, our coastline is a big part of what makes Malta, Malta. Turning it into an oil and gas hub could mean saying goodbye to all that.

PN’s Response: A Mixed Bag

So, what does the PN have to say about all this? Well, it’s been a bit of a mixed bag. While the party has been quick to distance itself from the chatbot’s more… colourful proposals, it hasn’t exactly been clear on what it would do differently if it were in power. The party has been talking about the need to diversify our economy, but it’s been a bit light on the details.

When asked about the chatbot’s proposals, a PN spokesperson told Hot Malta, “The chatbot is an automated tool and its statements do not reflect the official position of the Nationalist Party. The PN is committed to sustainable development and will always prioritise the environment and the interests of Maltese citizens.”

Strong words, but we’ll have to wait and see what the PN’s official position is on these proposals.

What’s Next?

So, where do we go from here? Well, for starters, we need some clarity from the PN. We need to know what they really think about these proposals, and what they would do differently if they were in power. We also need to have a serious conversation as a nation about what kind of future we want for Malta. Do we want to be an oil and gas hub, or do we want to build on our strengths as a tourist destination and a leader in sustainable development?

As for the chatbot, well, maybe it’s time for a software update. After all, it’s not every day you hear about plans for ‘megaprojects’ that could potentially reshape our coastline and our economy.

But until then, let’s keep talking, keep questioning, and keep pushing for a future that’s sustainable, that’s responsible, and most importantly, that’s in line with our values as a nation.
