PN Proposes School Wardens for Safer School Zones
Traffic Calm in School Zones: PN’s Warden Proposal
Imagine the bustling street outside St. Martin’s Primary School in Birkirkara, Malta’s most populous town. Cars jostle for space, engines rumble, and parents rush, their eyes scanning the crowd for their little ones. Now, picture this scene with a calm presence, a guardian ensuring safety and order. This is the vision of the Nationalist Party (PN) with their proposal for school wardens.
Wardens: A New Face in School Zones
The PN has proposed the introduction of school wardens, a dedicated presence outside every school in Malta and Gozo. These wardens, similar to those in the UK, would manage traffic, ensure safety, and foster a sense of community around our schools. But who are these wardens, and what would they do?
According to PN MP and spokesperson for education, Dr. Robert Arrigo, the wardens would be retired police officers or individuals with a strong sense of community service. Their role would be complex, from managing traffic flow and ensuring safe drop-offs and pick-ups to monitoring suspicious activities and reporting maintenance issues.
From Proposal to Reality: The Road Ahead
But how feasible is this proposal? The PN estimates that around 50 wardens would be needed, with costs covered by a mix of private sponsorship and government funding. However, the final say lies with the current Labour administration, which has not yet commented on the proposal.
Dr. Arrigo remains optimistic, “We believe this is a practical and affordable solution that would significantly improve safety around our schools. We’re open to discussing this with the government and hope they see the merit in our proposal.”
Meanwhile, parents and teachers welcome the idea. Maria, a mother of two at St. Martin’s, says, “Anything that makes drop-offs and pick-ups safer and less stressful is a good thing. I’d support this wholeheartedly.”
: A Safer School Run
As the school year begins, the debate around school wardens heats up. While the PN’s proposal is still in the early stages, it’s clear that it’s struck a chord with parents and teachers. Whether it’s the calm presence of a warden outside St. Martin’s or another school, the vision is of a safer, more ordered school run.
As Dr. Arrigo puts it, “Our children deserve the safest possible environment as they start and end their school day. School wardens are a practical step towards achieving this.”
