Żabbar Rescues Hompesch Theatre from Development
Żabbar’s Cultural Rescue: Council Acquires Hompesch Theatre
Imagine the echo of laughter and applause fading into the night, as the final curtain falls on yet another performance at the historic Hompesch Theatre. Now, picture this iconic Żabbar landmark, silent and dark, its future uncertain. This was the reality facing the Hompesch Theatre, until the Żabbar Local Council stepped in to save it from potential development.
From Baroque Beauty to Abandoned Gem
The Hompesch Theatre, a Baroque masterpiece, has stood proudly on Triq San Girgor in Żabbar since 1866. Designed by the renowned Italian architect Francesco Azzopardi, it was once the heart of Żabbar’s cultural scene. However, like many historic buildings, time took its toll. The theatre fell into disrepair, its stage silent, its doors closed to the public.
Rumors began to circulate about potential developers eyeing the prime location. The thought of this cultural gem being replaced by modern apartments or commercial spaces sent shivers down the spines of Żabbar’s residents and cultural enthusiasts alike. But Żabbar’s council had other plans.
Żabbar’s Cultural Crusaders
The Żabbar Local Council, led by Mayor Joseph Perici Calascione, decided to intervene. They saw the Hompesch Theatre not just as a building, but as a piece of Żabbar’s history, a symbol of its cultural heritage. “We couldn’t stand by and watch our heritage being sold off or worse, demolished,” said Perici Calascione.
After months of negotiations, the council reached an agreement with the owners. In a move that has been hailed as a victory for Żabbar’s cultural scene, the council acquired the Hompesch Theatre. The council plans to restore the theatre to its former glory, transforming it into a vibrant cultural hub once again.
Reviving Żabbar’s Cultural Heart
The restoration project is expected to take around two years and will cost approximately €1.5 million. The council has secured funding from various sources, including the Malta Arts Council and the European Regional Development Fund. The restored theatre will host plays, concerts, and other cultural events, providing a platform for local artists and attracting visitors to Żabbar.
Architects have been working on the plans, ensuring that the restoration stays true to the theatre’s original design while incorporating modern amenities. The project will also include the construction of a new cultural center adjacent to the theatre, which will house a library, a museum, and rehearsal spaces.
For Żabbar’s residents, the acquisition of the Hompesch Theatre is more than just a preservation project. It’s a testament to their love for their town and its history. “We’re not just saving a building,” said Perici Calascione, “we’re saving a piece of Żabbar’s soul.”
As the restoration work begins, Żabbar’s cultural scene is buzzing with excitement. The Hompesch Theatre is set to take center stage once again, ready to echo with laughter, applause, and the spirit of Żabbar.
