ADPD Battles Govt Over Mellieħa Land Transfer

ADPD: ‘Reverse Mellieħa Land Transfer, or Lose Our Trust’

Picture this: the lush, untouched fields of Mellieħa, a breath of fresh air in Malta’s otherwise urban scene. Now imagine them covered in concrete, a new development project sprawling across the horizon. This isn’t a dystopian dream, but a very real possibility if the ADPD’s warnings go unheeded.

Land Transfer: The Backstory

The Association for the Development of the Peripheral Regions (ADPD) is up in arms over the government’s decision to transfer a substantial chunk of public land in Mellieħa to the Malta Industrial Parks Company. The land, measuring around 150,000 square metres, is currently zoned for agricultural use. But the government’s plans? To turn it into an industrial park.

ADPD’s president, Mario Fava, isn’t mincing words. “This is a slap in the face to the people of Mellieħa,” he says, “and a betrayal of the government’s promises to protect our rural areas.”

Mellieħa: A Rural Oasis Under Threat

Mellieħa, nestled in Malta’s northwest, is a rural haven. Its rolling hills, farmlands, and traditional farmhouses are a stark contrast to the high-rise buildings and bustling streets of nearby towns. But with Malta’s insatiable appetite for development, even this idyllic corner of the island isn’t safe.

Local resident and farmer, Joseph Xuereb, echoes Fava’s concerns. “This land has been in my family for generations,” he says, standing amidst his olive groves. “If they turn it into an industrial park, where will we go? What will happen to our way of life?”

ADPD’s Call to Action

The ADPD is calling on the government to reverse its decision, arguing that the land transfer goes against the government’s own policies on sustainable development and rural protection. They’ve launched a petition, gathered signatures, and even held protests, with more planned in the coming weeks.

“We’re not against development,” Fava clarifies, “but it has to be sustainable, and it has to respect our rural areas. We can’t just concrete over every inch of Malta.”

So, what’s next? The government, for its part, maintains that the industrial park will bring jobs and economic growth to the region. But with the ADPD and local residents digging their heels in, this isn’t a battle that’s going to be won easily.

As Fava puts it, “We’re not going anywhere. We’ll fight this until the very end. Because this isn’t just about a piece of land. It’s about our identity, our way of life, and our future.”
